Project overview
The Water Bureau is investing in reliable water service in North Portland. We will replace 1,800 feet of water main (pipe) with earthquake-resistant pipe and install six hydrants on North Schmeer Road.
|
|
Construction happening now
Construction has started and will continue through August 2025. Crews have set up the staging area and are beginning to replace the water main. During this stage, crews will:
- Saw cut the pavement
- Dig trenches for the new water pipes
- Install the new water main and individual connections
- Cover open trenches with steel plates or fill trenches with gravel
Happening next
Once the new pipe is installed, crews will flush it with chlorinated water to sanitize the pipe. Then they will test the pipe to ensure it is sanitized.

This project will require road closures on North Schmeer Road between North Vancouver Avenue and North Whitaker Road.
Detour routes will change as work progresses. Traffic signs and flaggers will direct travelers around the closure areas. Stay alert and use caution as traffic may suddenly slow or stop.
