Ask a water expert: How does filtration make our water healthier?
We’re building a filtration facility designed to help further protect our health and make our water even safer for everyone. The project will use proven water treatment methods known to save lives and improve the health of people across the globe. The Water Bureau has also operated a mini-filtration facility to study how well different treatment options work specifically for Bull Run water.
One important public health benefit of filtration is the reduction of potentially harmful disinfection byproducts (DBPs). DBPs are formed when natural organic matter in water comes in contact with the chlorine added to kill harmful bacteria and viruses. DBPs are regulated by the EPA and while Portland’s unfiltered water is below regulatory limits, filtration will reduce DBP levels even more, making our water safer to drink.
Learn from Water Quality Engineer Anna Vosa how filtration will significantly reduce DBPs.
Filtration construction progresses
The Filtration Facility construction team continues to make significant progress on the east Multnomah County site. Within the first month of breaking ground, the team installed erosion control measures, tree protection, and perimeter fencing. Excavation and grading to develop construction roads at the site continues, and excavation has begun for a portion of the facility. Work has also started to bring access roads to the facility site up to Multnomah County standards, including widening the pavement, resurfacing the asphalt, and adding gravel shoulders. Resurfacing on haul routes is expected to begin this month along parts of Altman, Lusted, Cottrell, and Hosner Roads. These improvements will help maintain safe conditions for both construction and local traffic, and we plan to leave the roads in equal or better condition when the project is complete.

About the Bull Run Treatment Projects
To comply with federal Safe Drinking Water Act regulations, the Portland Water Bureau is planning a water filtration facility and related pipelines, and recently completed an improved corrosion control treatment facility. The Bull Run Treatment Projects will provide consistent, high-quality drinking water that meets today’s water quality standards, helps address aging infrastructure concerns and future risks and regulations, and improves system resilience to help keep our water safe and abundant for generations to come.
