The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is seeking input from Portlanders to evaluate BIKETOWN service area boundaries and analyze where new stations could be sited. PBOT will conduct a survey and meet with organizations interested in providing input over the coming months. The survey, which opens today, can be found here
Organizations interested in providing feedback should indicate their interest by emailing PBOT at PBOTSharedMicromobility@portlandoregon.gov.
PBOT and Lyft will use insights from the survey and public outreach to plan future expansions. The current 32 square mile service area could expand by up to eight square miles or 25 percent by the end of the year. In September 2020, the system expanded by 13 square miles when PBOT, Nike, the founding sponsor, and Lyft, the system's operator, transitioned BIKETOWN to 1,500 electric pedal-assist bikes and expanded into East Portland for the first time.
Since September 2020, BIKETOWN has installed nearly 30 new stations across the city, with the majority being in North and East Portland. The goal of future expansion efforts will be to bring the benefits of BIKETOWN to more areas of the city that have historically been underserved by bike infrastructure and services. BIKETOWN's e-bikes use a small electric motor to boost the rider’s pedal power, making longer trips easier and more accessible.
BIKETOWN’s growth is made possible in large part due to last year's extension of the sponsorship agreement with its founding partner. Nike increased its BIKETOWN sponsorship with PBOT by more than $8 million through September 2025 — building on the initial $10 million sponsorship for the system’s first five years of operation.
Launched in July 2016, the original BIKETOWN system made 1,000 bikes available for short-term rentals. Decked out in their signature orange, the bikes quickly became a popular transportation choice for Portlanders and visitors alike. BIKETOWN riders have logged 1.3 million trips since the program began.
