(March 1, 2018) - The Portland
Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) and presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente
announced the schedule and locations for the eleventh season of Sunday Parkways
today. This season will include five traffic-free events highlighting five
different Portland neighborhoods and will include a new route in Portland’s
Central City along the Green Loop.
“Every year PBOT’s Sunday Parkways finds a way to bring something
new and special to its programming,” said Leah Treat. “Our new Green Loop route
is going to be a wonderful way to introduce Portlanders to biking to some
of the most well-loved parts of our city. I can’t wait to show my kids how much
fun it is to ride to Downtown and the Central Eastside.”
The first event will be in Southeast Portland on May 20, 2018
and the season will close on September 23, 2018 in Northeast Portland.
“We at Kaiser Permanente Northwest are thrilled to return
for our 11th year as presenting sponsor of Portland Sunday
Parkways,” said Molly Haynes, Community Health Director for Kaiser Permanente’s
Northwest region. “Last year was the best season yet, with beautiful weather,
record attendance and enthusiastic participation in our Passport to Health
Sticker Hunt, which helped raise $5,000 for the Community Cycling Center’s Bike
Club for kids. This year, we’re especially excited to ride the new Green Loop
route through downtown Portland, which will engage a whole new group of riders,
and continue the sticker hunt fun for a good cause. We’re looking forward to
another record-breaking season that will get people out and active, connecting
with their neighbors and doing good for the community.”
After 10 years of Sunday
Parkways, organizers know that Sunday Parkways participants are incorporating
biking and walking into their everyday travel as a result of the events. All
five Sunday Parkways routes showcase low-traffic streets, called Neighborhood
Greenways, as well as City parks ideal for bicycling and walking.
The City of Portland Sunday
Parkways presented by Kaiser Permanente returns to the west side this year on
July 22 with its most ambitious route to date. The route, still in the final planning stages,
includes the North and South Park Blocks on the west side and SE 6th Avenue on
the east side to show off the newly City Council-adopted Green Loop project.
Dozens of businesses and apartment buildings have already expressed their excitement
about being a part of the newest Sunday Parkways route.
“We have repeatedly seen the benefit of bringing Sunday
Parkways to new streets and neighborhoods around the city,” said Commissioner
Dan Saltzman, who oversees PBOT. “The best way to get to know a place is on
foot or on bike. We are proud to be introducing all these wonderful areas of
our city to the thousands of Sunday Parkways attendees who participate in each
event.”
“The Green Loop belongs to
the entire city,” said Susan Anderson, Bureau of
Planning and Sustainability. “Sunday Parkways this year
will be an opportunity to experience the Central City along a route that is
safe and comfortable for everyone.”
