Winter Weather Travel Advisory:

PBOT urges the travelling public to expect a slow Thursday commute, provides status report and other tips for winter travel

(Jan. 11, 2016) In preparation for Thursday’s commute, tonight Portland Bureau of Transportation plow crews will concentrate their efforts on the City’s primary and secondary plow routes. These streets encompass Portland’s main public transit and emergency response routes, and they also link important commercial districts. A map of PBOT’s plow routes can be found here to download. An interactive map is available online that also indicates points of high elevation.

Through Thursday afternoon, the public should be aware:

  • Given expected freezing temperatures, roads that are plowed tonight may remain slick on Thursday. Snow will remain on neighborhood side streets and driving conditions won’t return to normal for several days.
  • Residents and business owners should take steps to clear the sidewalks in front of their homes and businesses as soon as possible. Work with your neighbors to help residents who may need assistance.
  • If you see a person who is not dressed for the weather and in immediate distress, call 911. If you encounter a person who wants access to emergency shelter, or if you want to make a donation, call 211.

Crews will plow the routes, apply de-icer and gravel where appropriate with the goal of making the streets passable. With temperatures expected to be below freezing overnight, the travelling public should not expect streets to be free of snow. The public should expect the morning commute to be slow, and PBOT urges them to exercise patience and travel with patience.

PBOT transitioned to around the clock coverage yesterday in advance of the storm. This coverage will continue through at least Thursday evening. Besides plowing streets, crews have also encountered and worked on clearing multiple downed trees. As of 4:00 pm on January 11th, 25 streets remained closed.
