PBOT News Advisory:

PBOT conducts snow chains demo at Tichner Sand Pile on West Burnside; PBOT and ODOT urge public to prepare for winter weather

Snow zone sign W Burnside

(Dec. 7, 2016) The Portland Bureau of Transportation will conduct a snow chains demonstration for the news media at 2 p.m. today at PBOT's Tichner Sand Pile on West Burnside Road at SW Tichner Drive. The Oregon Department of Transportation will join the event to discuss winter preparation and what the public needs to know. Both agencies warn the public that they will tow vehicles that are abandoned, blocking travel lanes or chain-up areas.

In light of the forecast snow and freezing rain, PBOT advises the traveling public to avoid unnecessary travel on Thursday, or use public transit. If you choose to drive, stay with your vehicle in a snow and ice storm and carry traction devices to help maneuver on slick roads. Any abandoned vehicle is subject to being cited and impounded. To locate your vehicle, call Police Auto Records at 503-823-0044.  If you are driving and visibility and conditions are getting worse rapidly, do not stop in a travel lane. Any vehicle creating a safety hazard is subject to towing. The current contractual cost of a tow is $168. The cost to store a towed vehicle past the initial four hours is $25 per day.

PBOT's web site offers a variety of winter weather tips.
