December 11, 2019 - The Oregon Department of Agriculture has put together a workgroup that will help the Department evaluate uses and potential restrictions on the pesticide product Chlorpyrifos in the state beyond the limitations specified on product labels. The goal for this workgroup is to explore the critical uses and evaluate appropriate science-based restrictions that protect public health and safety.
Members of the workgroup include leaders and experts from a wide cross section of interests, including agriculture, environmental justice groups, toxicologist and farmworker health-and-safety organizations. The committee's work will be transparent, collaborative and consist of inclusive communication, in-line with ODA’s mission and strategic plan objectives.

The workgroup will meet for the first time on December 17, 2019, at ODA headquarters in Salem. Follow-up meetings will be scheduled for January and March. There will be a 15-minute public comment period at the end of every meeting. Following the March meeting, ODA will develop a proposal that will protect public health balanced with the need for critical uses. Quick facts about Chlorpyrifos
- Chlorpyrifos is one of the most widely-used active ingredients in agricultural insect control products in the world.
- Chlorpyrifos is used to control pests on a variety of Oregon crops including, Christmas trees, alfalfa, grass fields, grapes, apples and wheat to name a few.
- Chlorpyrifos is used on non-agricultural sites including golf courses and for non-structural wood treatments. It is also registered for use to control mosquitos.
- Chlorpyrifos is prohibited by U.S. EPA for most residential uses since 2001.
