East Salem turns on the lights

Street light installation underway in East Salem

On June 3, PGE began installing additional street lights within the East Salem Service District (ESSD). Until this year, the ESSD had more than 130 individual lighting districts that had been formed by neighborhood petitions. This left some neighborhoods without adequate lighting and varying fee amounts throughout the district.

After receiving numerous requests for additional lighting from residents and businesses in East Salem, the district’s governing body approved a single lighting district that consolidated the 130+ smaller districts into one lighting district covering the full ESSD area. Lighting will be installed throughout the district, and residents in the ESSD will pay the same fee.

Property owners in the ESSD will see the assessment for the new lighting district on their 2019-2020 property tax statements. This year the assessment is $25.62. When all of the lights are installed, the fee is expected to be in the range of $35-$40 per year.

For more information about the East Salem Street Lighting Project, see our Frequently Asked Questions page, or visit the ESSD website.

Sheriff's Office patrols underway in East Salem

East Salem patch

“It’s been great to see you in the neighborhood.” Those are the words Dep. Chris Bangs has heard again and again since he began patrols in East Salem. Residents regularly thank him when they see him in the area and some are particularly pleased to see enhanced traffic enforcement.

Since beginning his duties in East Salem in January, Dep. Bangs has been joined by Deputies Matt Hagen, Alex Fox, Rick Kittelson, Justin LeBlanc, and Shawn Connelly.

The increased presence by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office was made possible by the addition of public safety services to the East Salem Service District (ESSD). Once the remaining four deputies complete training, there will be a total of 10 deputies assigned to East Salem with 24/7 coverage in both the Four Corners and Hayesville areas. The monthly $10 fee assessed to households, apartments, and per acre of commercial property pays for the dedicated patrols.

Deputies assigned to ESSD are busy getting to know community members and businesses. They regularly attend neighborhood association and other community meetings to work with residents to address community concerns.
