April 18th, 2025 Newsletter
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Our priority this week was getting bills passed in the House. I am happy to report that we passed 64 bills, which are now headed to the Senate.
Legislative Priorities
Two of my priority bills passed in the House.
Age Discrimination in the Workplace
Watch my floor speech
HB3187 A addresses discrimination that older workers face when applying for a job. The bill prohibits employers from asking for an applicant’s age, date of birth, or date of graduation until after the initial interview, unless age is a bona fide occupational qualification or otherwise required by law. For more information, please see the Press Release.
Price Transparency
Watch my floor speech
HB3533 A promotes price transparency by requiring sellers to advertise the total price of a consumer good or service. This will ban hidden “junk fees” and “drip pricing,” which mislead consumers and undercut businesses that are upfront in their pricing practices. For more information, please see the Press Release.
Highlights from the House Floor
The House of Representatives passed other significant legislation this week, including the following:
-
HB2251 A requires school boards to adopt policies to prohibit K-12 students from using cell phones during class time, with exceptions.
-
HB2964 A creates a loan program to fund the predevelopment costs of new housing projects and requires the new housing to remain affordable for low-income households.
-
HB3560 A expands allowable sites for childcare centers, including in certain residential zones.
-
HB2008 A updates our data privacy laws to prohibit the sale of our geo-tracking data (i.e. the data our phones collect about where we live, work, shop, etc.) and any data about children who are 16 years old and younger.
The House Committee on Commerce and Consumer Protection did not meet this week.
Housing & Homelessness
The committee held public hearings on the following bills:
-
SB586 A: allows a landlord to pay a tenant one month's rent to reduce from 90 to 60 days the termination notice period that a landlord must give the tenant when selling the dwelling unit to buyers who intend to reside in the unit.
-
SB814 A: modifies eligibility criteria for the long-term rental assistance program for certain individuals under 25 years of age.
-
SB967 A: authorizes local governments to enter into agreements governing local improvements proposed for unincorporated areas within an urban growth boundary.
