It’s hard to send a “normal” weekly email with a walkout looming

Represenative Emerson Levy

Friends,

It’s hard to send a “normal” weekly email with a walkout looming; however, I will do my best. I do want to acknowledge that many, many of you that receive my weekly Legislative Session emails have poured your heart into policies that might not come to fruition. That weighs heavy on me. There is the phrase: this is politics it’s not personal, but to quote my favorite movie, and the beloved character, Kathleen Kelly from You’ve Got Mail

What is that supposed to mean? I am so sick of that. All that means is that it wasn't personal to you. But it was personal to me. It's *personal* to a lot of people. And what's so wrong with being personal, anyway?..... Whatever else anything is, it ought to begin by being personal.

Housing, Education, School Safety, Healthcare: this is all personal. I will be here everyday with a prayer in my heart for cooler heads to prevail and knowing that this work is deeply personal to you and our community.

Now on to the regularly scheduled newsletter…

All the best,

Weekly Happenings!

Fire Service Day

Fire Service Day at the Oregon State Capitol: Thank you to the Oregon Fire Chiefs Association for coming out, connecting with the capitol community and sharing the crucial policy objectives of the fire service. A  special shout out to Fire Chief Johnson from Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District and Operations Chief Boos from Bend Fire & Rescue for being here!

Wildfire season is upon us, and I am eternally grateful for our fire service members for working tirelessly to keep our community safe. Check out this helpful information from the Oregon State Fire Marshal on how to best prepare for the oncoming wildfire season. Knowledge is power!

The City of Bend has prepared a helpful page on how to Own Your Zone: This lists actions every homeowner can take to create defensible space around your home. Taking these actions can help slow or stop the spread of wildfire- potentially saving your home, your neighbors home or even your neighborhood.

Fire Safety Zones

Upcoming Spring FireFree Events: Deschutes County Solid Waste and Project Wildfire have teamed up to provide FREE vegetation disposal! Reducing vegetation and trimming back your plants can help create defensible space. Here are opportunities to dispose of that material:

  • Redmond: Negus Transfer Station (2400 NE Maple Way) June 3, 5-10, 12-17 (Mon-Sat) 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
  • Sisters: NW Transfer Station (68200 Fryrear Rd) June 3, 7-10 & 14-17 (Wed-Sat) 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily

Celebrating the Yearlong Partnership between the University of Oregon’s Sustainable City YearUO / Sisters Project Program (SCYP) and the City of Sisters: Last night I had the opportunity to attend this special event celebrating the accomplishments of UO students, who have been working to solve vexing problems in the community. The University of Oregon’s Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP) helps students prepare for the workforce through applied learning. Their projects included: affordable housing funding options, improving transportation options, adaptive reuse of the Sisters Elementary School and more! Thank you to the students and faculty at UO who have been hard at work collaborating with the City of Sisters!

Senate Republican Government Shutdown Threatens Safer Oregon Agenda:

Safer Oregon Agenda

Our families, small businesses and communities deserve to feel safe in their neighborhoods –free from fear. That’s why we announced a more than $4 Billion Public Safety & Accountability Budget and a Safer Oregon Agenda that responds to this moment with solutions to prevent and solve serious crimes, including gun violence prevention and taking on the fentanyl crisis.

It includes public safety solutions that would make sure law enforcement has the resources they need to solve crime, make our roads more safe, support children and adults who are victims of sexual and domestic abuse, and more. We need them to show up and vote.
