May 12th COVID-19 Update

Michael Dembrow

May 12, 2021

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and looking out for your neighbors and friends in these difficult times.

Today’s daily COVID report and the just-released weekly report both point in the same direction: an end to the big increases in COVID cases and positivity rates, and a gradual decline from the surging numbers of a couple of weeks ago.  On the other hand, COVID deaths seem to be increasing among people under 60.  Hopefully, that will end as (if?) more of those in this age group get vaccinated.

Earlier this evening the CDC Director gave formal approval to the use of the Pfizer vaccine for younger adolescents.  Pharmacies and other vaccination sites will begin offering the vaccine as early as tomorrow to those between the ages of 12 and 16.  I was delighted to learn that my own grandchildren have appointments to receive their first shots early next week.

And today marked one of those accomplishments that we like to see: more than 2 million Oregonians have now received at least one dose of the vaccine.  That's nearly 57% of those 16 and over.  It leaves around 430,000 who will still need to be vaccinated in the next 4-6 weeks if we're to hit the target of 70% by July 4 to put an end to the safety restrictions.

Please stay safe and let me know if you have any questions about information in today’s newsletter.
