January 11th COVID-19 Update

Michael Dembrow

January 11, 2021

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and looking out for your neighbors and friends in these difficult times.

Today’s COVID case numbers continue to decline, as do hospitalizations.  This could be a function of lower weekend reporting, or it could be more than that.  We’ll see as the week progresses.

Today’s first day of the 81st Legislative Assembly fortunately went without negative incident.  As expected, no protests took place outside the Capitol.  We should, however, anticipate their return for our next in-person session on January 19, as part of the expected national actions from those opposed to the inauguration on January 20.

Today’s Senate session went relatively quickly.  We did have one Senator (Dallas Heard of Roseburg) who refused to wear a face covering and chose to leave once we adopted Senate rules that require everyone to wear one while the pandemic is raging.

The House session went on much longer, as they had to deal with the question of what to do with Representative Mike Nearman, the legislator who opened the door and allowed violent protesters into the Capitol on December 21st.  He is the subject of an ongoing investigation.  For now, he has been stripped of his committee assignments, obliged to pay a $2,000 fine to cover the damages his actions caused, obliged to give up his pass key, and had to promise not to allow non-legislators into the building.  In addition, the Speaker of the House has called on him to resign.  You can read more about it in today’s Oregonian.

Again, if you’re interested in seeing all the bills that were introduced today, you can https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2021R1  Bills will be assigned to committees by next Tuesday.

Please stay safe, and let me know if you have any questions about information in today’s newsletter.

If they later test positive by PCR, those will be recategorized as confirmed cases.
