Closing Out 2020

Representative Raquel Moore-Green

December 31, 2020

"We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope."

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Friends –

2020 will go down in world history in a manner that has yet to be completely comprehended. We can say that there is not a living person on our planet that has escaped the consequences of a world wide pandemic, a world wide shutdown of our respective communities, and associated isolation from human interaction.

As one of 90 citizens in Oregon that will help generate the legislative response to the pandemic, wildfires, and civil unrest I see it as a monumental undertaking. A response that will be incomplete, flawed, and lacking because we fail to completely understand all of the circumstances we find ourselves in. It is always easier to "Monday morning quarterback."

However, I am confident that the leaders you have sent to the state house will attempt their very best to do the most they can for all Oregonians. Earlier this week I participated in a four hour long send off, via zoom, to fellow members of the House that will not be returning for the 2021 legislative session. As the accolades and funny stories were shared a common theme developed - we must not forget that Oregonians are a fiercely independent lot. With that independence comes varied needs and approaches to solutions that face all communities.

Not every community will address police accountability in the same manner, not every community will look to solve the homeless problem the same way, and not every community will need health care services delivered in the same manner. It is our independence, our uniqueness, our diversity that defines us as Oregonians. It is also what can bind us together - if we allow it to.

It is December 31, and I am not a "new years resolution" sort of person, I tend to micro manage my "new" on a daily basis. I will make a pledge to you - the constituents of HD19 - South Salem, Turner, and Aumsville: to remember the uniqueness of your community, your independence, and your aspiration to make your community the best it can be.  As I approach the work ahead on issues we face, striving to pull our communities together to work on common issues, common funding and flexibility for community solutions will be my goal.

In the interim if we can be of help to you as you navigate your state government please call or email. My door is always open and my staff, Pam McClain, Lena Prine, and I welcome your participation. As your state representative, I am here to listen, respond, and lead. Be safe.

Wishing you and your families a very Happy New Year!
