Year in Review

Greetings and Happy New Year from your Oregon Capitol!

We know that this holiday season looked a little different for everyone, but we hope that each of our readers were able to find creative and safe ways to celebrate their respective family traditions.

2020 was truly a year like no other. After canceling the majority of our 2020 programming over the spring and summer, we were excited to bring our heritage partners together for Multicultural Day Re-Imagined—a virtual rendition of our annual Multicultural Day event—in August.

Capitol Tour

In lieu of an in-person Capitol experience, we directed visitors to our 360° Virtual Capitol Tour, which we are excited to announce is now available in Mandarin and Spanish.  Click to View

The virtual tour project is sponsored by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation.

We developed a virtual catalog  for our Oregon Capitol Store, where visitors can view and select from our unique merchandise even while the building is closed. If you don't see what you're looking for email us at capitol.store@oregonlegislature.gov or call us at 503-986-1391.

And as schools—and parents—adjusted to distance learning, we built on our collection of educational resources for them. Teachers can now find the Capitol on Flipgrid—a free online learning platform—and we plan to announce more early next year.

Holiday Re-Cap

Finally, the Capitol maintained its well-loved December tradition, Holidays at the Capitol, by hosting a virtual rendition of the popular event this season.

Our 39th annual holiday program kicked off with a Virtual Tree Lighting ceremony, featuring words from elected officials, a sponsor shout-out, and footage from our 2018 and 2019 tree lighting events, sponsored by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation. Then, for the rest of December, we restreamed our 2019 holiday performances online. It was a wonderful way to bring the sound of the holidays to your home, and we hope you enjoyed!

We cannot wait to welcome you all back next year to celebrate our 40th year of this special event, which hosts thousands or Oregon school children, high school and college performers, and community choirs that perform in the Capitol Rotunda.

Read on to learn how we're kicking off our 2021 program:

Oregon Birthday

Our great state will be celebrating its 162 anniversary of statehood on February 14, 2021.

To commemorate, we usually open up the Capitol and have a celebratory bash on the Saturday closest to the 14th, but we will be moving the festivities online this February.

Please join us at our Facebook Event Page or at oregoncapitol.com to follow us as we share historical facts and trivia, activities, videos and sing “Happy Birthday” to Oregon. An online event will start at 10 a.m. on Sunday, February 14th and be available to view through the end of the month.

More information about this event will be shared in next month’s newsletter. Stay tuned!

The presenting sponsor for this event is the Oregon State Capitol Foundation.

TIMBER CULTURE EXHIBIT AVAILABLE ONLINE

Maxville collection photo

This month's Capitol History Gateway partner highlight features the Maxville Heritage Interpretive Center.

Located in Eastern Oregon, the center's mission is "to gather, catalog, preserve, and interpret the history of Oregon's early logging community of Maxville."

Many of its exhibits and programs explore race and diversity in Oregon's logging communities. One such exhibit—Timber Culture—traveled to the Capitol in 2018, and is now available to view in its entirety online.
