December 3rd COVID-19 Update

Michael Dembrow

December 3, 2020

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and looking out for your neighbors and friends in these difficult times.

Our daily COVID case numbers remain close to where they’ve been, with 1,151 new cases reported today.  This figure would have been a shocking one a month ago, but being in a period of relative stability feels like a good thing, particularly as the national numbers continue to soar.

Unfortunately, we also seem to be settling into a very high number of COVID deaths these days.  I’ve decided to add a graph that tracks the number of new COVID deaths over the last two weeks.  You’ll find it at the end of the newsletter.

Please stay safe, and let me know if you have any questions about today’s newsletter.

TODAY’S CORONAVIRUS AND CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE UPDATE

  • New COVID Cases: OHA reports 1,151 new COVID cases today.  This count is a combination of positive test results and those who are presumed positive (see definition below).  The cumulative number of cases in Oregon since the beginning of the pandemic is 79,293.
  • Positive Test Results: OHA reports an additional 1,799 positive test results today. The cumulative total of positive test results since the beginning of the pandemic is now 114,191.
  • Total Tests: OHA reports 21,382 additional test reports today. The cumulative total of tests given since the beginning of the pandemic is 2,043,324.
  • Positivity Rate: The rate of positive test results for Oregon is 8.4% today.  The national ratio today is 11.6%.
  • Deaths: I’m sorry to have to report 21 additional COVID deaths today. You can read about the Oregonians we lost further down in the newsletter. The total number of COVID deaths in Oregon is now 973.
  • Hospitalized: OHA reports 58 new COVID hospitalizations. The cumulative number of those who have been hospitalized with COVID is now 4,803.
  • Presumptive Cases: OHA is including “presumptive COVID-19 cases” in its reports, consistent with recently amended guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A presumptive case is someone who does not yet have a positive PCR test but is showing symptoms and has had close contact with a confirmed case. If they later test positive by PCR, those will be recategorized as confirmed cases.
  • Other Hospital Information:
    • Patients Currently with COVID-19 Symptoms (who may or may not have received a positive test result yet): 629 (9 more than yesterday). Of those, 559 (10 more than yesterday) have already received a positive test back.
    • Available ICU Beds: 133 (4 fewer than yesterday)
    • Other Available Beds: 559 (13 more than yesterday).
    • ICU Patients w COVID-19 Symptoms: 122 (9 more than yesterday).
    • COVID-19 Patients Currently on Ventilators: 52 (four fewer than yesterday).
    • Available Ventilators: 729 (17 fewer than yesterday).
  • Dashboards:
  • Today’s National Numbers:
    • Total Tests: 197,409,766 (up 1,807,951 from yesterday).
    • Total Cases: 13,921,312 (up 210,161 from yesterday.)
    • Deaths: 267,228 (up 2,706 from yesterday).
    • These national numbers come from the COVID Tracking Project. You can here follow them here.
  • Additional Brief Updates:
    • The Governor’s Office has created a useful new website that allows you to enter a county and a particular kind of activity, and it will tell you what kinds of restrictions are in effect for that activity.
    • The Governor will be holding a press conference tomorrow to update the press and the public on COVID response. They’ll be using a Zoom format for the press and a livestream for the public available here.  Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL) simulcasts will also be available.
    • The Governor has announced the Oregon members of the Western States’ Scientific Safety Review Workgroup, which is tasked with reviewing the different vaccines and recommending them for approval. This is an added precautionary step in addition to the national FDA approval process.  You’ll find the information about the appointees and the work of the Workgroup in this press release.
    • OHA has learned that Oregon can expect to receive more than three times the number of vaccines originally expected in the first round, i.e., those coming by the end of this month. This is of course contingent on approval  of the vaccines by the FDA and the Western States’ Safety Review Workgroup.  These initial vaccines will go to front-line healthcare workers. You can read more here.
    • FEMA has provided legislators with an update on a range of wildfire response measures. You can read about them here.
    • We also just received an update from the Red Cross on the work they’ve been doing with wildfire survivors. The Red Cross is currently sheltering just under 1,100 clients in 50 hotels throughout the state.  They continue to play an important role in this difficult effort.
