Dear Neighbors and Friends:
I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and looking out for your neighbors and friends.
Since it’s Monday today, I’m able to give you a clearer picture about positive test results and hospitalizations for the last few days. You’ll see that hospitalizations have plateaued at an average of 14 new COVID hospitalizations a day. I’m happy not to have to report any additional deaths today, and today’s number of new positive tests and presumed positive cases has dropped back down to 168. (It wasn’t that long ago that this number would have seemed shockingly high!)
Let’s hope this is the beginning of a trend.
TODAY’S CORONAVIRUS AND CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE UPDATE
-
Positive Cases: Now that the weekend is over, we have the OHA report of positive test results since Thursday. (The numbers that I reported over the three-day weekend included those presumed positive but still awaiting test results.) An additional 1,025 people tested positive since Thursday, a four-day average of 256 per day. The cumulative total for those testing positive is now 9,902.
-
Total Tests: OHA reports a four-day increase of 16,846 since Thursday, or an average of 4,212 per day. The cumulative total is now 267,228.
-
Ratio: The percentage of positive tests results for the last four days is 6.1%. The national percentage today is 9.1%. You can see the ratio for the last two weeks in a graph below.
-
Deaths: I’m pleased to report 0 additional deaths due to the coronavirus. The total number of deaths in Oregon remains at 215.
-
Hospitalized: OHA has reported 56 additional hospitalizations since Thursday, or an average of 14 per day. The cumulative number of those who have been hospitalized with COVID is now 1,125.
-
Presumptive Cases: OHA is now including “presumptive COVID-19 cases” in its daily reports, consistent with recently amended guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A presumptive case is someone who does not yet have a positive PCR test result but is showing symptoms and has had close contact with a confirmed case. If they later test positive by PCR, those will be recategorized as confirmed cases. The total number of presumed positives is now 493.
-
Other Hospital Information:
- Patients Currently w COVID-19 Symptoms (who may or may not have received a positive test result yet): 183 (10 more than Thursday). Of those, 118 have already received a positive test back.
- Available ICU Beds: 168 (same as Thursday).
- Other Available Beds: 816 (11 fewer than Thursday).
- ICU Patients w COVID-19 Symptoms: 61 (9 more than Thursday).
- COVID-19 Patients Currently on Ventilators: 26 (1 more than Thursday).
- Available Ventilators: 797 (9 fewer than Thursday).

Additional Brief Items:
- The Employment Department has issued new Frequently Asked Questions for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program and a new set for employers.
- OSU reported today the latest results from its TRACE study in Newport. Along with the randomized nasal testing that was done in Newport two weeks ago (and which showed a relatively high incidence as a result of the outbreak at Pacific Seafood, they did an analysis of the wastewater system that examined the existence of COVID in human waste. Indeed, they found significant traces of the disease there, as opposed to an examination of the waste in neighboring towns. They will do both kinds of studies again this weekend.
- The Statesman-Journal has an interesting story about the work that Oregon OSHA is doing in response to public complaints about non-compliance with executive orders at various workplaces. You can read it here.

OHA has developed a webpage with fact sheets and other downloadable resources about contact tracing that will help you know what to expect if you or someone in your household gets a call:
