June 9th COVID-19 Update

Michael Dembrow

June 9, 2020

Dear Neighbors and Friends:

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well, staying healthy, and looking out for your neighbors and friends.

Now that the big outbreak in Newport has been accounted for, today’s daily count of new cases has gone back down to the “new normal” range in the 60s (66 to be specific).  That’s the case despite a large number of new tests yesterday, so as a result the percentage of positive cases has gone back down to the range that allowed us to begin reopening.  That’s good news.

On the down side, our number of new COVID hospitalizations has risen over the last week, and today’s number of new deaths is five.

Tomorrow the Governor will be meeting with legislators and local officials to hear the latest thoughts/plans from the Department of Education regarding the reopening of schools.  I’ll let you know the highlights in tomorrow’s newsletter.

TODAY’S CORONAVIRUS AND CORONAVIRUS RESPONSE UPDATE

  • Positive Cases: OHA reports that 66 additional Oregonians have tested positive for COVID-19.  The cumulative total is now 4,841.
  • Total Tests: The total number of tests in Oregon now stands at 153,470. That’s an increase of 3,738 tests from yesterday.
  • Ratio: The percentage of positive results for today has gone back down to 1.8%. Today’s national percentage is 4.2%.  See below for a graph showing Oregon’s daily percentage changes over the last 14 days.
  • Deaths: I’m sorry to have to report 5 additional deaths due to the coronavirus today.  The total number of deaths in Oregon is now at 169.
  • Hospitalized: OHA reported 8 new hospitalizations today. The cumulative total of those who’ve been hospitalized for COVID-19 is now 851.
  • Presumptive Cases: OHA is now including “presumptive COVID-19 cases” in its daily reports, consistent with recently amended guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A presumptive case is someone who does not yet have a positive PCR test result but is showing symptoms and has had close contact with a confirmed case. If they later test positive by PCR, those will be recategorized as confirmed cases. Today’s number of new presumed cases is 4, and the total number of those presumed positive is 147.
  • Other Hospital Information:
    • Patients Currently w COVID-19 Symptoms (who may or may not have received a positive test result yet): 145 (8 more than yesterday). Of those, 63 have already received a positive test back.
    • Available ICU Beds: 190 (7 fewer than yesterday).
    • Other Available Beds: 1026 (107 fewer than yesterday).
