House District 30 News - January 2020

Rep. Sollman

Friends and Neighbors,

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a peaceful and happy holiday season and that 2020 brings you happiness, health and prosperity. I am looking forward to the work ahead that we face in the Capitol. Legislative days are just a couple weeks away and the 2020 short session begins on February 3rd. I was thankful to enjoy some down time during the holidays to celebrate with my family at home and I hope that you were able to spend time with those you love.

2019 has come to a close and so does an end of a decade. I am so proud of the work that has been done over the last 10 years to move our state forward and build a better future for every Oregonian. This includes so much incredible work that would be impossible to fully list. Here is a small sampling of all that has been done:

  • One of the nation's highest minimum wages (2016)
  • Historic funding for public education (2019)
  • Paid Family and Medical Leave Insurance (2019)
  • Protections for Immigrants (2017, 2019)
  • Equal rights for LGBTQIA+ Oregonians (2015, 2017, 2019)
  • First-in-the-nation affordable housing policy (2019)
  • Medicaid expansion and health care for every Oregon child (2011, 2012, 2017, 2019)
  • Income tax cut (2019)
  • Office of Small Business Assistance (2013)
  • Historic investments in services for veterans (2016, 2019)
  • Coal-to-Clean Legislation (2015)
  • Automatic voter registration (2015)
  • Gun violence prevention (2015, 2017, 2018)

As we look to the opportunity of a new decade and the need for Oregon to continue tackling its biggest challenges, including action on the climate crisis, I am excited to continue the work we have been engaged in to make Oregon a great place for all who call her home.

Bill Updates  (January 1st effect date)

  • HB 2509, the Single Use Bag Law, will eliminate single use plastic bags from being used at checkout at retail establishments and restaurants. I am excited that Oregon will be doing its part to help reduce plastics in our environment. Read more about how the bill works here. #BringyourbagOR
  • HB 2910 will expand the Oregon Promise grant to those who graduate from high school while incarcerated, yet still have six months or more remaining on their sentence. They will be able to freeze that six month time window until they are released and can then apply for the Oregon Promise when able to attend college.

Here is a list of all the bills that passed in the 2019 session.

Upcoming Bills

For the upcoming 2020 Legislative short session, one of my priority bills that I am focusing on is safe gun storage. I have stated before and continue to remain committed to working on common-sense gun violence prevention. This is a topic that I have consistently heard about in my Community Conversations and throughout the district when talking with constituents. The bill I will submit is not a new concept. I am moving forward with a bill that was introduced in the last session. Small changes have been made in tightening up some of the language for clarification. This bill is about saving lives and creating opportunity for positive change for the safety and well-being of our kids and those who may be experiencing a mental health crisis. I heard the critical call for action and I am honored to be able to work with advocates and constituents on this important legislation.

Get Involved

Did you know? Volunteering is good for your mental and physical health! A recent article by Vice says that "Studies have found that helping others has tangible benefits, both mental and physical, from lowering your blood pressure to reducing feelings of depression." Make a New Year's Resolution to volunteer more often and help yourself at the same time. While there are many great organizations to choose from that match your passion, here are some local options:

What's Happening

  • The Chief Clerk’s office is ready to start accepting applications for our page programs in Salem. We are excited to announce that in addition to the traditional, single day Honorary Page Program we now offer the option of a week long program. Our new Legislative Page Program will be an exciting, educational opportunity for students 12-18 who would like to spend an entire work week in an in-depth exploration of civics and the legislative process.

The new Legislative Page Program will operate for two weeks during the 2020 short session, Feb 17-28th. We have 14 spaces available so act quickly.

The traditional Honorary Page Program will operate as usual, Feb 10-28 of the short session.

#TeamJaneen

I feel incredibly fortunate to have student voices heard and be a part of the conversation. Nickole and I enjoyed a celebration with my interns over the holidays. Kelly Xu has been with me since the beginning and I am so proud of her and her success at Rice University. Ryan Smith is a senior at Glencoe High School and just recently received the news that he was accepted to attend Yale University next fall. Lily Donis is the newest member of our team and as a Sophomore at Liberty High School, her future shines brightly. They have worked on research, helped at events and with community outreach efforts. I am so fortunate to work with such passionate and engaged people as part of my team.

2020

I am so grateful to represent our district in Salem, a district I have lived in for 27 years. My husband and I have raised our two boys in House District 30. Our area has experienced a lot of change and growth. I promise to continue to continue to stand up for our district and LISTEN to you, LEARN of the issues and ACT when it is needed for positive change. Thank you, as always, for continuing with me on this journey. Please don't hesitate to reach out to myself, or Nickole in my office, with any questions or concerns. I wish you all a Happy New Year.
