Action Packed November at the Capitol

NOVEMBER 2019

The Gateway

The Visitor Experience at the Oregon State Capitol

Second World War Exhibit in Galleria

The Second World War - An Oregon Perspective Exhibit Runs Until Nov. 28

The archives of the Oregon Jewish Museum and Center for Holocaust Education includes testimonies about the Second World War and the Holocaust from soldiers, liberators and survivors. Some of these stories have been put into a traveling exhibit that is on display until November 28 in the Oregon State Capitol’s Galleria.
The study of the Holocaust and the sharing of stories keep alive the memory of the millions who were killed. Such remembrance bears witness to the horrors of the Nazi camps and raises a powerful moral and political voice against acts of racism, injustice and cruelty wherever and whenever they occur.
The exhibit is part of the Capitol History Gateway project and is sponsored by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation.
The Salem Veterans of Foreign Wars 661 Uniform Display Museum has supplemented the exhibit with seven service uniforms worn by Jewish soldiers in WWII. They have graciously supplied some WWII memorabilia to display as well. Each uniform is accompanied by a one-page biography of the person who wore it and two uniforms are very rare for their collection – one a Jewish Infantry Brigade Group of the British Army belonging to Sgt. Israel Tal and the Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) uniform of Enid Fisher.
To learn more of the stories preserved by this exhibit, come to the Capitol Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

A Tribute To Veterans Poster

Oregon Spirit Chorus To Perform at Capitol on Nov. 8 at Noon

You are invited to attend the fifth annual A Tribute to Veterans event, Friday, November 8, at noon. The Tribute will start with the presentation of the colors by the North Salem High School Army JROTC Color Guard in the rotunda, followed by a performance from the Oregon Spirit Chorus.
The Oregon Spirit Chorus joined Sweet Adelines International in 2007. Since their first regional competition in 2008, the chorus has achieved first place in their division nine times. In 2015, Oregon Spirit competed at the International Harmony Classic Competition in Las Vegas earning third place. The chorus has 34 members and are under the direction of Kathy Scheel.
“We are appreciative of this opportunity to again provide a tribute to veterans,” Scheel said of their performance at the Capitol.
This is a free event open to the public. Refreshments will be served and free stick flags will be available to the first 100 people. Parking is metered around the Capitol. This event is part of the Capitol History Gateway Project and is sponsored by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation.

Les AuCoin and Book

Former Congressman Visits Capitol to Share Stories and Sign Book

Les AuCoin will share stories of his rise in politics on Tuesday, November 19 at noon in Hearing Room C of the Oregon State Capitol. This event is free and open to the public.
In 1974, at the age of thirty-two, AuCoin became the first Democrat to win a US House seat in Oregon’s First District. He was one of the post-Watergate reformers who shook up an insular, autocratic Congress and led fights for affordable housing, “trickle-up” economics, wilderness protection, abortion rights, and nuclear arms control. In the 1980s, the Oregonian called him “the most powerful congressman in Oregon.”
AuCoin has recently published his book, Catch and Release – An Oregon Life in Politics. In this compelling collection of life stories, AuCoin traces his unlikely rise from a fatherless childhood in Central Oregon to the top ranks of national power. Then came a painful defeat in one of the most controversial races in US Senate history, against incumbent Bob Packwood.
Catch and Release will be available for sale in the Capitol Store and AuCoin will be signing the book after his presentation. Refreshments will also be served.
The presentation will also be streamed online at www.oregonlegislature.gov. The Speaker Series is sponsored by the Oregon State Capitol Foundation.

Brigette Harrington

Local Essay Winner Publishes Book

Brigette Harrington, a Hillsboro resident who won last year’s US Capitol Christmas Tree Essay Contest by Governor Kate Brown’s office, will be signing her newly released book “My Oregon” on Monday, November 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Oregon State Capitol Store.
More than 1,200 fourth graders from across the state submitted essays about why they love Oregon’s outdoors in hopes of winning a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. and light the “People’s Tree” (an Oregon fir) on the West Lawn of the White House with House Speaker Paul Ryan in 2018. Harrington won, and then journeyed throughout the state for various speaking engagements and then made her way back East to light the tree.
She decided to publish her winning essay accompanied by illustration in a newly released book “My Oregon.” The book will be for sale starting Monday, November 18 at the Oregon State Capitol Store. Hard copies sell for $25, the paperback version is $12.
