The Visitor Experience at the Oregon State Capitol

Oregon Pioneer Up Close

Climb 121 Steps to Get Up Close to the Gold Man

The tour to the top of the Capitol provides some of the best views of the Willamette Valley. On a clear day, a visitor can experience a "five mountain day," which is what the Visitor Services team likes to call a day in which Mts. Hood, Jefferson, Adams, Rainier and Saint Helens can be seen.
Interpretive signage was just installed this spring, including panels that showcase the panaramic stories of the Capitol's surroundings including Willamette University, the Capitol Mall, and the Willamette River.
On June 17 tower tours will open to the public. Tours will depart from the Capitol Rotunda at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. daily. These free tours are capacity controlled, weather depending, and a waiver must be signed to participate. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Tours are 30 minutes in length, and visitors can extend their stay by joining a half-hour public building tour to make a great one-hour experience.
Be prepared for the climb, and also note that if it is raining or above 85 degrees we close the tower due to guest safety.

Concert in the Capitol Mall

Partner Spotlight on Salem Philharmonia Orchestra

Next month the Oregon State Capitol Foundation will present an hour-long concert by Salem Philharmonia Orchestra (SPO) in the Capitol Mall. The foundation has been putting on a summer concert series since 2016, and the SPO has been a partner ever since.
The SPO provides an opportunity for musicians and audiences in Salem and the surrounding communities to participate in affordable (and free) performances of high quality symphonic literature.
The objectives of the SPO are simple: to make live symphonic music easily accessible to the community and to give community members an opportunity to play in a symphony orchestra.
We greatly appreciate our continued partnership with SPO. This year's concert takes place on Saturday, July 27. The Capitol will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Concert will start in the park at 11 a.m. and go for one hour. For more information on the SPO, click the logo below.
