Hello Friends,
Happy Mother’s Day. A day to celebrate those women who have nurtured and cared for children, loved ones, and friends. The character of a good mother that in part propelled Mother’s Day to a national holiday was that of Ann Jarvis, who cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War and later created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.
Ann’s kindness and care were not overlooked by her daughter Anna, who later lobbied the federal government to establish Mother’s Day in the United States after Ann died. Her first attempts, in 1908 failed, but by 1914 her hard work paid off with President Wilson signing a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as a national holiday honoring mothers.
Recalling the history of this special Sunday serves to remind us of the time and dedication woman before us have taken to honor and acknowledge work by women, that many times goes unnoticed, in the nurturing they provide not only to their families, but also to our communities.
HB 3032, co-sponsored with Rep Drazen (R-39) had its public hearing in the Joint Committee on Student Success. As you might recall, it moved out of the House Committee on Education last month but had a subsequent referral to Student Success. This bill would have minimal fiscal impact and aims to ensure parents are informed both if their child is bullied as well as if their child is accused of bullying another student.
HB 3063, the legislation on vaccination, passed the House floor vote on Monday after a lengthy floor debate and a packed gallery of Oregonians who will be impacted by the legislation. It is now over on the Senate side.
HB 2020, the Carbon Cap & Trade legislation continues to expand in volume with it's 181 page -84 amendment discussed at it's recent work session held Monday. Stay tuned as it's still unclear where this will land.
Several Senate Bills are moving through the House Health Care Committee this week, as any bill in a policy committee from the Senate must be scheduled for a work session at this point. There are efforts to curb rising health care costs in a variety of ways, including reigning in pharmaceutical costs, capping health care growth rates, and mandating increased transparency from coordinated care organizations and hospital community benefit plans.

So, it is still unclear where these efforts will land. What is clear, is that there is plenty of sun out there this weekend to enjoy Mother’s Day with family and friends!
Enjoy your weekend!.
