Wildlife Forest Protection Bill Moves Forward, Affordable Housing Pilot Project Bill gets hearing

Hello Friends,

This week in Salem, we had some good news from the House Committee on Natural Resources, as the Wildlife Forest Protection Bill (House Bill 2222) passed unanimously. HB 2222 requires the State Forestry Department to annually report on the implementation of the Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act of 1997. The 1997 Act incentivizes property owners to reduce excess vegetation around homes and fuel breaks between cities that could contribute to fires and requires the Oregon Department of Forestry to assist in accomplishing these goals. Protecting the lives and property of Oregonians from catastrophic wildfire should be the top priority of ODF. This bill now heads to the House floor for a vote.

Other good news this week is our Affordable Housing Pilot Project Bill for Redmond (HB 2336) will get a public hearing and a possible work session on April 1st in the Senate Housing Committee. If you would like to submit written testimony you can send an email to the committee SHOUS.Exhibits@oregonlegislature.gov.

This week also included a list of all the tax bills coming out of the Legislature and are heading to various committees, like the Revenue Committee, for hearings. These bills contain tax increase legislation that adds up to more than SEVEN-BILLION-DOLLARS! I am monitoring the bills closely and will continue to voice concerns about the effects of these increases on Central Oregon families.

I would like to take a moment to recognize my team, that works day-in and day-out to help me accomplish our goals of giving Central Oregonians a voice at the Capitol.

Jihun Han is my Chief of Staff and works diligently to take care of everything in Salem, while my wife Z works as the In-district Legislative Assistant to take care of things back in the district. They work together to ensure that our message to Salem reflects the current concerns and opinions of Central Oregonians.

For appointments and inquiries at the Capitol, please email Jihun at Jihun.Han@oregonlegislature.gov

For appointments in-district or to schedule a meeting with Z, email her at Zanthel.Zika@oregonlegislature.gov

This weekend I am heading home to attend the Future Farmers of America State Convention. I look forward to meeting the amazing students part of this organization that promotes student development in leadership, personal growth, and career success, through agricultural education.

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Yours truly,

Representative Jack Zika

Replacement Dwelling

Earlier this week, I testified on House Bill 3024 which would have given clearer guidance on replacement dwelling applications.
