House District 30 News - Feb '19

Janeen Sollman

Friends and Neighbors,

The Legislative Session has begun, and we are off to a great start here in Salem and around the District. During the interim, before session began, I was privileged and humbled to tour the Coffee Creek Correctional Facility in Wilsonville. I was inspired to see the women’s participation in continuing education, the GED program and in learning skills that can help them once their sentences are complete, such as working in the eye clinic, cosmetology center or learning tattoo removal skills.

Out and About in the District

  • Hillsboro State of the City with Mayor Callaway and the Youth Advisory Council
  • Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce Legislative Reception

January 14th was Inauguration Day here at the Capitol and I was excited to share that day with my family in attendance. I was also joined by Liberty High School senior and intern, Kelly Xu, and Hillsboro’s Mayor Steve Callaway, who were my special guests on the floor as we listened to the Governor’s inaugural address. Kelly shared, “On January 14th, Governor Kate Brown was sworn in after she won her re-election in 2018. Watching her give her inaugural speech, I felt like the glimmer of hope that sparked on election night last year had transformed into a beacon, lighting the way for a better, brighter future for Oregon. It was like I was watching history unfold. The turning point where Oregonians would reject the hatred and divisiveness that has arisen in the past few years had finally come and I was there to witness it.”

On January 16th, I was pleased to host our first Listen & Learn event at Tobias Elementary in Aloha, along with elected officials from the Hillsboro School Board, City of Hillsboro, Metro, and Washington County. We enjoyed a great turnout from the community and it was an amazing opportunity for people to interact with their elected officials in many different areas. Thank you to those who joined me in these conversations with our friends and neighbors.

Meet my team. Whether running my office here in Salem or working alongside me in the House District 30 community, Drew and Nickole are my go-to people.

Drew profile
  • Drew has been working with me in Salem since the 2017 session. He is a 2014 graduate of Western Oregon University, where he earned a degree in Political Science. Working in Salem has provided such opportunity. His favorite part of the working in Salem is being able to see the impacts in the community of the work we are doing everyday. Drew is most interested in working on issues around access to affordable education, foster care issues, and issues surrounding folks with developmental disabilities. Helping to organize and be a camp counselor for Camp Eagle in Hillsboro was a highlight this past year. When not working, Drew can be found in a ballpark catching a game, golfing, hiking, and spending time with friends and family. Stop by the Capitol office and Drew will certainly have a joke for you…he has plenty to share and keeps the 4th floor guessing those punchlines. 😉
Nickole profile
  • Nickole and her family have lived in House District 30 for 18 years. She recently completed the Hillsboro Civic Leadership Academy and currently enjoys serving her community as a Hillsboro Parks and Rec Commissioner. She is a graduate of Portland State University and has a degree in Social Sciences. While working in Salem, Nickole is most excited about learning the ins and outs of government and policy making. Her particular topics of interest are around immigration issues and social and environmental justice. When not working in Salem, Nickole enjoys reading crime thrillers or historical fiction, cooking and eating yummy food, and sleeping in!
kid governor

Bill Update: Recently at the Capitol, I was privileged to meet Oregon’s Kid Governor, Erikka Baldwin. Her mission focuses on finding forever homes for rescue dogs and cats and I am proud to co-sponsor two bills this session that do just that.

  • HB 2804 will prohibit retail pet stores from selling or offering to sell dogs, cats or rabbits acquired from                        sources other than animal shelters or rescue                                              organizations.
  • HCR 12 will designate rescued shelter dogs and cats as official state pets.

Follow along with the progress of these two bills by clicking on the links or visiting OLIS, Oregon’s Legislative Information System.
