The 2019 Legilsative Session Begins

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

The 2019 Oregon Legislative Session is in full swing. To keep District 39 updated on funding, taxes, and laws under consideration I will be sending out a newsletter each month. My responsibility to represent you in Salem is strengthened when we work together and I would love to hear from you!

Please let me know what you think about new taxes, schools, health care, or any proposals that impact families in our community. And, as always: if you would like to propose changes to Oregon laws please let me know. My office is here to serve you and I hope you will write, call, come visit at the Capitol or attend a town hall meeting this session.

It’s an honor to represent you in Salem and I look forward to hearing from you as we consider funding and policies which will impact House District 39.

Sincerely,

Christine Drazan

Cap and Trade Response

I know many of you have questions about the Cap and Trade legislation currently working its way through the process. After reading the draft proposed last week here are some of my initial thoughts.

Like all Oregonians, I am committed to protecting Oregon’s clean air and water, as well as maintaining our healthy working lands and forests. Unfortunately, some inside the political process would manipulate Oregonians’ support for our environment to raise billions in revenues-- primarily through an increased gas tax on Oregon families--starting at an additional $.16 cents a gallon. This worries me. Gas taxes were just raised and this drives costs even higher. So many families can’t afford to pay more to get to school or work and those that are on a fixed income are especially vulnerable to skyrocketing prices at the pump.

While many of Oregon’s largest businesses have cut special deals with powerful legislators and environmental activists, most families in our community have no such protections. And, small and medium-sized businesses will feel the squeeze with increased costs, that will be passed straight through to consumers or felt by employees in reduced hours and fewer jobs. We can implement our existing climate standards and do our part to address climate change in Oregon without asking Oregon families to write a blank check to cover global climate emissions.”

I want to join the call for a statewide tour so that Oregonians can have a say in the Cap and Trade Plan. We need to make sure Oregonians impacted by this legislation are having their voices heard.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Cap and Trade legislation please reach out to me. I want to do all I can to be a voice for you in Salem.

Oregon Foster Youth Connection

Thank you very much to these three young women from Oregon Foster Youth Connection for coming in and speaking with me today about the Oregon Independent Living Program.

This is a valuable program that helps those leaving the foster care system make the transition to life on their own.
