2019 session is right around the corner!

Janeen Sollman

Friends & Neighbors,

I hope that you enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday and were able to spend some time reflecting on what you are most thankful for. I enjoyed spending time with my family; eating wonderful food and playing some of our favorite games. As we move into December, that means we are getting closer to the start of the 2019 legislative session. I have been busy preparing the work ahead with meetings, research, and important conversations around legislative concepts. I look forward to working closely with some of my colleagues on issues such as campaign finance reform, veteran  issues, education, gun violence prevention, environmental concerns and more. I hope that you will join me in this work by finding what issues are most important to you and working together to help pass meaningful legislation for all Oregonians.

Lobby Days

Advocate for what you believe in -

As we head into the 80th legislative session, I wanted to share a few advocacy tips that you might find helpful when you are wondering how you can get involved. These are just a few tips that you may consider. I always look forward to meeting with constituents and hearing from you.

  • Follow bills, committee hearings, and submit testimony on OLIS (Oregon Legislative Information System)
    • You can follow and find bills and areas of interest within the Oregon Legislature. You can also find any written testimony that has been submitted, video hearings, and live streams of events as they happen. This is a crucial tool if you are hoping to keep up to date with what happens very quickly sometimes in the legislature.
  • Even if we agree on the issue…LET ME KNOW!
    • The most meaningful pieces of information we can receive is directly from the people we represent – YOU! Please share your stories and examples of why a bill could help or harm your situation. This allows me to use my platform to help those directly living in House District 30 and highlight the very real ways that these policies impact our daily lives.
  • Visit me in Salem!
    • I know it can be hard to travel all the way to Salem during the work week, but if you happen to be in the building and would like to meet, please stop by the office. My staff will do everything in their power to find time in my schedule, or they will drop what they are doing to listen to you. 503-986-1430 is my office phone number.
  • Join a Listen & Learn event near you…
    • Salem isn’t the only way to meet with me . I hold many community listening sessions across the district, at least once monthly in a local coffee shop. This year I am on track for 24 events. Let me know if you have ideas for future outreach.

OSBA

I spent an afternoon with Rep. Sprenger & Rep. Doherty at the Oregon School Board Association annual convention to speak with board members about advocacy!

STEM Ecosystems

In November, I was able to join our Oregon team in California for the STEM Ecosystems conference. We spent two days learning from other states, highlighting our Oregon STEM practices and networking with innovators. I joined a tour of an E-Sports Arena and experienced a tournament where high school students competed (League of Legends) on-screen in real time. Fellow students, parents, siblings and even grandparents, were there to cheer the students on.  We heard from local industry partners about their interest in these types of programs in terms of future careers. The conference was a lot to experience in two days, but I look forward to bringing back what I’ve learned and exploring additional ways we can grow more STEM opportunities in our state for our students. STEM skills are skills needed in every career opportunity.

YAC

Have you heard the exciting news that happened in Hillsboro? The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) just passed the first youth-led initiative in city history. This policy restricts single-use plastic bags at grocery stores, large retailers and restaurants starting in 2019. Check the article out here to learn more about what Hillsboro’s YAC students are doing to bring about positive change in our community.
