Week 2 Update

Ronald H. Noble

Hello Friends,

WEEKLY UPDATE

Happy Monday! We are on day 11 of the short session here at the Capitol, and things are moving quickly.  We are busy – and getting busier!  The House Floor Sessions are not only longer, but we are having to add additional sessions to keep up with all that is going on.  These sessions are full of lively debate, spirited exchanges of ideas and important votes on issues critical to all Oregonians.  I am excited to fill you in on just a few occurrences from last week!

NOTEWORTHY ITEMS FROM THIS WEEK

  • House Bill 4145, relating to advance directive, passed through the House with a vote of 37 to 23.  The Bill will now be heard in the Senate.
  • House Bill 4135, relating to firearms, passed through the house with a vote of 35-25 and will now be heard in the Senate.
  • I had the privilege to honor two fallen police officers this week in our House Floor Session - Deputy Thomas Robert Farrell and Deputy Gil Catalino Datan.  Both of these officers died in the line of duty, protecting and serving their communities.  To honor them, the House voted to use the  Oregon Fallen Officer Highway Memorial Sign program to show our ongoing support to their families and to demonstrate our lasting gratitude for their service.

When I’m not on the House Floor or in Committee Meetings, I have the opportunity to meet with many District 24 constituents of all ages. This type of interaction with people in our community always makes the days better!  Meetings this week included:

  • Oregon Recovers, a statewide coalition comprised of people in recovery from addiction, came to discuss Oregon’s addiction issue.
  • The “Go” Project, which is a program that helps people with disabilities and their families educate others about their stories, their concerns and the impact of different policies effecting people who experience developmental disability.
  • On University Lobby Day, I had the pleasure to meet with students from our District who had concerns about a variety of current issues that college students face every day.
  • My office received and met with individual constituents who have important ideas and issues they would like to discuss with me directly, which is something I always appreciate.

UPDATE ON MY BILLS

  • HB 4115 – This bill had a work session on February 14th in the Business and Labor Committee.
Status:  The bill passed out of Business and Labor and was referred to the Rules Committee

  • HB 4116 – This bill is simply a “fix” to HB 2597, which we call the “distracted driving” bill.
Status:  A work session was held on February 15 and the bill was passed out of Committee.  A 2nd Reading is scheduled for Tuesday, then to the House Floor for a vote on Wednesday.

  • HB 4005 – This bill will require prescription drug manufacturers to report annual information to the Department of Consumer and Business Services regarding the prices of prescription drugs, and costs associated with developing and marketing prescription drugs.
Status: A Work Session was held on February 9th, and the bill passed out of Committee with a vote of 8-2.  The bill has now been assigned to The Subcommittee on Transportation and Economic Development.

As you can see, there are plenty of things going on here to keep everyone busy and on their toes. We are working intently to try and make sure we can do the best we can for the people of Oregon in the short time we have this session. It is important to take the time to hear and understand the questions and concerns that are prevalent within our communities so that we can accurately represent the needs and desires of people within House District 24. My office staff tries hard to ensure there is time set aside each day to meet those needs.

That being said – please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office, look at my website, give me a call, visit me on Facebook or even stop into my office.  It is always a pleasure to hear from you and gain insight on the issues that face the people of Oregon. Until next week!
