Friends & Neighbors,
The holidays are upon us and the hustle and bustle of the
season is gearing up. I’ve spent a lot
of time in the community, including volunteering, a few days in Salem for
legislative days, and then got to spend time with my family during
Thanksgiving. One of my highlights for this month was that I put in my two
requests for legislation in the 2018 short session. There were many requests,
and I truly appreciate the outreach, advocacy, and conversations with so many
of you. I want to ask that we keep those
conversations happening. The legislative process works better for all when that
happens.
How to stay involved
in the process:
OLIS – The Oregon Legislative Information
System is the best way to follow along with the bills and topics that you are
interested. You can track specific policies, committees, and keywords. It is a
great way to stay up-to-date with everything that is happening in Salem.
Find your legislator – It is important to make
sure that when you are reaching out, that you are reaching out to the
legislator who represents your district. Click on the link to find who
represents you.
Attend town halls & listening sessions – I want
to get to know you and see you at our neighborhood meetings. It is a wonderful
opportunity to be face-to-face and hear your concerns, ideas and comments.
Communicate – Even if you know that your legislator
is on your side of an issue, it is still important to hear from you! Having
direct communication allows me to bring your stories to the conversations I
have on the topic, and helps me to cement my stance even more!
Visit Salem – I know that it can be tough to get time
off from work to go to Salem, but if you have some time or are in Salem during session,
my door is always open to constituents, and I welcome the conversation.
Take Survey – Many legislators have put out
district surveys to know exactly how their constituency is feeling. My survey
is linked below and I would love to hear from you! English and Español.
I love the opportunity to visit events, places, and people!
I believe it helps me serve my district better and to live by my legislative
motto of #ListenLearnAct. Here are some
activities that happened in November:
Breaking the Silence Premiere - In early November, I
attended the screening of “Breaking the Silence,” a film that highlights being
an LGBTQ soldier in the military. It was a great event with some great keynote
presenters. View the trailer here!
OSBA Panel Member – This year I got to attend the Oregon School Board Association annual meeting, this time as a panel member. It was a great discussion about how my time as a school board member prepared me for the legislature. I was joined with Rep. Diego Hernandez and former Rep. Mark Johnson for the discussion.
North Plains Elementary Book Donation – On November 17, I spent my morning at North Plains Elementary reading How the Grinch Stole Christmas to a blended 1st/2nd grade classroom. Directly after the reading, my heart grew three sizes (Grinch reference) because I was able to partner with McDonalds to present the students with more than 70 donated books! The Hillsboro Tribune did a great article, and you can read it here!

Women for Climate Change – This was a great event,
spending some time with fellow female colleagues, to discuss the importance of
the Clean Energy Jobs bill. I was joined by many other legislators,
Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, and many other community leaders that have been
pivotal in the conversation surrounding climate change.

As you can see, this has been another busy month and I
wouldn’t have it any other way. I am so grateful to be your legislator for
House District 30, and I thank you for following along on this journey. I hope you’ll
take my survey to let me know what you are hoping to see accomplished in 2018
and for the future. Representing you is my number one priority and I want to
make sure that as times are changing, I stay up to date as possible on what you
care most about! Enjoy the holidays; spending time with family and friends with
good food and blessed memories.
