Friends & Neighbors,
This month I
have spent some time in recovery mode, as I had knee surgery nearly 3 weeks ago
and I am happy to report, I'm on the mend. I have been able to continue my work
in the community and do some exciting things this month such as; HillsDoer
Volunteer Day, Preschool Storytime, AAUW speaking event w/Rep McLain.
I also held a couple of listening sessions, where I got to hear from the community on issues
that are important to House District 30. I really appreciate everyone who comes
to these sessions. Representing you is my top priority, and I hope that if you
are having concerns about what is going on in the state or community that
you’ll reach out or come to one of these community conversations so that we can
look for solutions or answers to your concerns.
Issues that have
been expressed as top concerns from neighbors this month:
- Loss of
healthcare coverage
- Senior
low/fixed income housing increases
- Immigration
concerns
- School
infrastructure/bond questions
- Changes to our recycling practices
As we get closer
to November Legislative Days I have been focusing much of my time on meeting
with community members, partner groups, and other stakeholders in my process to
determining my proposed two pieces of legislation for the 2018 short session.
During even
numbered years, the legislature meets for 35 days. Each legislator can only
introduce two pieces of legislation, and things move rather quickly. I have yet
to pin down my two for the upcoming session because I want to make sure that
each piece of legislation that I bring forward will have a path to success.
This means doing all of the meetings I normally would do during the long
session, before session starts, and making sure that everything is ready to go
come February 5.
I will continue
to research, meet with constituents, and then I hope to have a made final
decision by the middle of November. This is going to be a very fast paced
session and I am really looking forward to everything that will come. If you
have any questions on the legislative process I encourage you to reach out to
my office so we can help you navigate it!
Left: Visited a local author, Erika Bracken Probst who had her book signing about celebrating diversity in our community last weekend! Right: I spent my HillsDOer Day at the Oregon Food Bank preparing meals. It was a great day, and I encourage you to sign-up next year!
As some may have
heard, China is placing new restrictions on what they will be accepting as
recycled materials starting in 2018. I have been very concerned about the
changes that are coming regarding recycling due to a changing market. I have
been meeting with various organizations over the past two weeks to discuss
plans moving forward. I feel encouraged that there is a sense of urgency to
work on this issue. I believe that protecting our environment is a value that
Oregonians share, and we have a real opportunity to make improvements.

- Public
outreach and education on Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
- Materials
Recovery Facility (MRF) investments and improvements
- Product
Stewardship
1. We have a
real opportunity to work on our outreach and education with the public during
this transition. We need to work on ways to encourage and educate on reducing
and the reuse of products to reduce our consumption of goods and production of
waste.
2. We also need
to educate on how we can make the process cleaner for our MRF's. I am committed
to advocating to support MRF's with ways to better serve the public efficiently
and make the process cleaner. Our MRF's need to be investing in machinery that
will create a cleaner stream for the recycling market.
3. Lastly, we
must have product stewardship. We need our partners in business to consider
their packaging choices and look for ways to reduce their waste. Are they using
material that is bio-degradable or recyclable to provide a service to the
public?
As a certified
Metro Master Recycler in the Master Recycler Program and a State
Representative, this is work I am passionate about and will advocate for. This
cannot be done alone or just a few, if this is a value that we as Oregonians
hold dear, we must work together to create positive change. Stay up to date on updates in our community by following this website!
