Friends and Neighbors,

Earlier this month, I was sworn in as your State Representative for House District 26, which includes Scholls, Sherwood, and parts of Wilsonville, King City, Tigard, Beaverton, Aloha, and Hillsboro. I am filling the vacancy created by Representative John Davis (R-Wilsonville), who retired after representing this district for the past four years. Rep. Davis served our communities with distinction, and he worked hard to make sure that this district was well represented as it continues to be a leader in job creation and private sector growth. I intend to work collaboratively with my legislative colleagues to build on that legacy and to increase transparency and accountability in every branch of government.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your State Representative. I have been appointed to serve as Vice Chair of the Transportation Policy Committee as well as a member of both the Education and Judiciary Committees, and I am honored to be your voice in Salem.  I am optimistic about the opportunity to work with my colleagues in the legislature to address these and the other challenges facing our State today.

As the current Chair of the Washington County Planning Commission and a land-use attorney, transportation issues are one of my top priorities this session. Oregon’s current traffic congestion problems make our communities less livable and stifle our economy.  That is why I intend to advocate for funding to maintain our current roads and to explore options for additional infrastructure development.

Also, as a former Chair of the Groner School Board, I am very passionate about education. I believe our education system is critical to the health and success of our communities, and that is why I will support efforts to push resources closer to the classroom and to explore alternative strategies to providing quality education and improving our high school graduation rates.

I intend to send out newsletters like this regularly. You can also monitor my work by visiting my legislative website at www.oregonlegislature.gov/vial.  Most importantly, though, I welcome your input and value your perspective. I urge you to share your views by emailing me at rep.richvial@oregonlegislature.gov or by calling my office at (503) 986-1426.  If you are ever in Salem during the legislative session, you are welcome to visit my office in the Oregon State Capitol.  My staff and I welcome the opportunity to serve you in any way, whether it is through the legislative process or through personal assistance with state government.

Sincerely,
