January Newsletter from Representative Carla Piluso

Carla Piluso

Friends,

Happy New Year. What an historically snowy winter this has been! I hope this newsletter finds you safe and warm. Thank you to our service workers who braved the weather to drive our buses, staff our stores, and deliver our mail.

Snowy Lady Liberty

For those of you who are curious about the record snowfall we’ve been experiencing, the City of Portland has compiled some fascinating data that you can find by clicking here.

Even though the snow has melted, many warming shelters are low on reserves. Please consider dropping off supplies like towels, socks, and blankets if you’re able. You can click here to find a shelter close to you.

Session Approaches

My colleagues and I were sworn in for the 2017 Regular Session on January 10th. The Oregon Legislature will be in session starting February 1st, 2017. My office is already working on issues related to affordable housing, public safety, veterans, and funding for education.

The 2017 Session Brings New Committee Assignments:

Human Services and Housing: If you’re wondering which committee will tackle affordable housing issues, this is it! I was on this committee in 2015-2016 and look forward to addressing concepts related to human services; such as public assistance, disability services and access to stable housing.

Early Childhood and Family Supports: This committee is brand new and will tackle issues specifically related to the education and development of children from birth to age 5, and on supporting families. I am honored to serve as Vice-Chair of this committee.

Ways and Means Public Safety Sub-Committee: I am also new to this committee. My colleagues and I will determine funding mechanisms for public safety related legislation. I am excited to learn more about the budget process.

If you’d like to read and keep track of all of the bills I am working on, please check my Bill Tracker, which I will update regularly.

I Am A Bill

Do you care about a particular issue or bill? Please send me an email at rep.carlapiluso@oregonlegislature.gov! Don’t forget to include your name and address. Your thoughts and input are very important to me.

Meet My Staff!

I have two Legislative Assistants helping me this session. They will be the ones staffing my office, helping me with community outreach, taking notes in my meetings, and keeping me organized! Meet Emily and Rachel:

Emily Langston: You might recognize Emily, who has been on my team since March of 2016. Emily graduated from Portland State University in 2015 with a double major in Political Science and Community Development. She is primarily interested in policies related to public health, emergency management, and criminal justice reform.

Rachel Gowland

Rachel Gowland: Rachel joined my team in January. She graduated from the University of Oregon in 2015 with a degree in geography and a minor in political science. She is particularly interested in education, land use policy, and child welfare. Previously, Rachel was the Campaign Manager for my colleague, Senator Laurie Monnes Anderson. I am excited to have both Emily and Rachel on my team.

Let's Grab Coffee!

My first constituent coffee of the session will be at 10 AM on Saturday, February 25th. We’ll meet at the Rockwood Public Safety Building in the Community Room. Senator Monnes Anderson and I will be discussing our priority bills in depth and welcome your input. I hope to see you there!

That sums it up for now. Thanks so much for reading. I look forward to seeing you on February 25th.

Fondest Wishes,
