Hillsboro Police Department - Significant Milestones
1973 - Hillsboro Police hired its first full-time female police officer. Nancy Jones (pictured right) was eventually promoted to Sergeant and attended the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.
2000 - To help ensure fair and equal application of stop and search laws, Hillsboro Police was the first agency in Oregon to begin extracting and analyzing data related to racial profiling. The work started with five officers in a pilot program which gathered traffic and subject stop data. In 2017, House Bill 2355 was enacted and signed into law, requiring all Oregon law enforcement agencies to collect and report data related to officer-initiated traffic and pedestrian stops. This is known as STOP data (Statistical Transparency of Policing).

Flashing Red Lights on a School Bus
Oregon law requires drivers in both directions to stop for flashing red lights on a school bus when traveling on two-lane and multi-lane roadways, except on a divided highway.
Divided Highway Exception - Drivers traveling in the same direction as a school bus must stop when the flashing red lights are engaged. However, those driving in the opposite direction do not have to stop for flashing red lights when the roadway is divided by a physical barrier - paved or unpaved median strip. A physical barrier can be a concrete raised barrier, grass barrier, or guard rails. The unpaved space must be a minimum of five feet.
A double yellow line or continuous left-turn lane does NOT constitute a physical barrier. Drivers in both directions MUST STOP and stay stopped until the red flashing lights on the school bus cease.
A driver who violates this traffic law is subject to a $440 citation.
Watch Out for Scammers Who Tell You They Can Get Your Money Back
Refund and recovery scammers buy lists of people who’ve already been scammed, hoping they can be scammed again. The scammers contact you, saying they’ll help get your money back or recover the prize or merchandise you never got. To sound trustworthy, they might say they’re with a government agency (even the Federal Trade Commission), a consumer advocacy group, or a law firm — but it’s all a lie.
They’ll then tell you to pay a “retainer fee,” “processing fee,” or “administrative charge,” or share your financial information so they can (supposedly) deposit the refund. But if you pay, they’ll steal your money…and if you share your information, they might steal your identity.
Yields 189 Traffic Stops
Hillsboro Police, in partnership with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, and the Beaverton and Tigard Police Departments, conducted the mission, focusing on three roadways in Hillsboro:
- Main Street from 10th Avenue to Cornelius Pass Road
- Cornelius Pass Road from Main Street to TV Hwy
- 32nd Avenue from Main Street to Cypress Street
Violations Cited:
- 28 – Distracted Driving
- 54 – Speed
- 9 – Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device
- 30 – Other
Additionally, officers conducted three Truck Inspections for operating on a prohibited roadway (SE 32nd Avenue).
