Ensuring Coverage & Compatibility When It Matters Most
The Hillsboro Police Department has upgraded its radio system to include UHF (Ultra High Frequency) and VHF (Very High Frequency) alongside its existing digital network. This tri-band system improves communication across different environments, both urban and rural. And it provides for redundancy (a back-up), in case the primary system fails.
With better coverage and compatibility with other emergency agencies, this upgrade ensures reliable communication and more coordinated efforts with other local and federal partners during routine operations, mass disasters, and large-scale critical incidents. It's a practical step toward making sure the Department can serve and protect the community more effectively, every day and in any situation.
Card Skimmers Found in Hillsboro
Last month, multiple skimming devices were discovered at local stores across the metro area, including in Hillsboro. Photos above show how realistic the devices look - covering the original keypad and card reader.
Skimmers, keypad overlays and hidden cameras steal the cardholder's information - name, account number, expiration date and PIN (Personal Identification Number).
When using your debit or credit card, including at ATMs:
- Pay attention to a loose keypad, card reader or other attachments on the terminal that just don't look right.
- If anything appears suspicious, don't use it. Notify staff / manager.
- Some retailers are putting security seal tape on their devices. If the tape is broken, don't use it.
- If you can, tap your card instead of swiping. If that's not an option, inserting the card's chip would be the next safest option.
- Cover your fingers when you enter your PIN.
- Monitor your accounts regularly for unauthorized transactions.
If you become a victim of card skimming, immediately contact your financial institution and the retailer, and report it to police. In Washington County, the non-emergency number is 503-629-0111.
5 Ways to Reduce Persistent, Annoying & Sometimes Scam-Related Phone Calls
Add your phone number for free to the National Do Not Call Registry. Registering will likely decrease the number of unwanted calls you get. Unfortunately, it won’t completely stop calls from scammers to your home and mobile phones — and there are still organizations and groups allowed to call you.
Hang up on robocalls. Getting a lot of recorded messages trying to sell you something? Odds are the calls are not legal. Don’t press any numbers or call back. Instead, hang up and report them at DoNotCall.gov
LEARN three more ways to reduce unwanted phone calls and minimize your chances of being scammed.
Police Cadets Put Their Skills to the Test
More than 50 police cadets from around the metro area competed last month in the Multi-Agency Cadet Competition (MACC) in Hillsboro. The one-day event featured practice scenarios in building searches, high risk and unknown traffic stops, and response to domestic violence and suspicious person calls, as well as crime scene investigations.
At Hillsboro Police, cadets are volunteers 15-20 years of age. Some are exploring a future career in law enforcement, but not all of them. Regardless of their career ambitions, being a cadet helps to develop and shape leadership, teamwork, decision-making, and communication skills that will benefit them in life, no matter what path they choose to pursue.
