Officer Erickson died in the line of duty on February 28, 1980. He was tracking a suspect with his K-9 partner Nero when he suffered a fatal heart attack.

Washington County Earns First Place in Regional Competition
The Washington County Crisis Negotiation Team (CNU) competed against nine other skilled teams from across the Northwest. The challenge, a seven-hour scenario-based event designed to test their communication, decision-making, and teamwork under pressure. Their performance reflects their dedication to continuous training and their critical mission of protecting lives during high-risk incidents.
The CNU is a highly trained, multi-agency unit composed of members from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and the Hillsboro, Beaverton, Tigard, and Tualatin Police Departments. They respond alongside the Tactical Negotiations Team (TNT) to incidents involving barricaded subjects, suicidal individuals, and hostage situations. Their goal is to bring calm to chaos, using communication, empathy, and negotiation strategies to peacefully resolve volatile situations and safeguard everyone involved.
Chaplain Libby Spotts Receives the Cadonau Award
Libby is an invaluable asset to the Hillsboro Police Department, dedicating over 2,186 hours of volunteer service, including responding to thirty-six (36) 9-1-1 calls for crisis intervention.
Her daily presence at the police precincts, an empathetic approach, and her willingness to provide spiritual and emotional support have made a profound impact on both HPD personnel and our community. Libby’s compassion shines in times of crisis, offering not only a listening ear, but also guidance and support, whether in the field or behind the scenes.
What sets Libby apart is not just her tireless work ethic, but her ability to connect with people on a personal level. Officers, detectives, and professional staff members feel comfortable turning to her for support, whether it’s for personal advice or simply to share a moment of light-heartedness. Her genuine care, compassion, and selflessness make her an exceptional selection for this award.

Eduardo Guillermo Madrid-Roque Found Guilty in TriMet Sexual Assault Case
On June 14, 2023, the 63-year-old victim traveled from California to Oregon. She consumed wine on the flight. However, due to a recent change in her prescription medication, she had a bad reaction, which caused her intoxication level to be higher than expected. The victim landed in Portland and took the MAX line to the Hillsboro Transit Center. After her arrival, the visibly impaired victim sat on the sidewalk and became unconscious. She lay on the sidewalk for approximately an hour prior to the defendant’s arrival.

Stop as Yield Law for Bicyclists
A bicyclist who is approaching an intersection where there is a stop sign or a flashing red light may, without violating the law, do any of the following without stopping - if the person slows the bicycle to a safe speed and yields to other traffic and pedestrians.
- Proceed through the intersection.
- Make a right or left turn onto a two-way street.
- Make a right or left turn onto a one-way street in the direction of traffic.
Bicycle riders are still required to...

make a complete stop and remain stopped at a steady red light;
- yield to pedestrians and traffic approaching or already in the intersection;
- and follow the direction of road work flaggers.
