Hillsboro Police Officer Gerald Erickson and All Who Gave All
Officer Erickson died in the line of duty on February 28, 1980. He was tracking a suspect with his K-9 partner Nero when he suffered a fatal heart attack.
A Grant Will Fund Cameras for Watch Commanders & Detectives
In 2016, the Hillsboro Police Department (HPD) applied for and received grant funding for the implementation of a body-worn camera program; one of the first agencies in Washington County to implement such a program.
Two years later, HPD successfully issued 115 body-worn cameras to Patrol officers/sergeants, Traffic officers/sergeants, Transit officers/sergeants, K-9 officers and School Resource Officers. Over the course of a five-year contract with Axon (vendor), HPD purchased 10 more cameras for our Reserve police officers, as well as additional software to assist in managing the program.
In 2023, the contract with Axon was renewed for five more years, and HPD determined that expanding the body-worn camera program to include Detectives and Patrol lieutenants was in order. The Department then applied for and received grant funding to expand the program by purchasing 25 additional cameras.
Deployment of those cameras is tentatively set for the latter part of 2024. Once purchased, the total number of body-worn cameras will be 150 department-wide.

Steady Red RIGHT Turn Arrow
Unless signage (or a police officer) dictates otherwise, you may make the RIGHT turn after coming to a complete stop behind the stop line/crosswalk AND yielding to surrounding traffic (vehicles & bikes) and pedestrians. That would be traffic from your left and those oncoming who are turning into the same lane(s) you plan to travel, as well as pedestrians crossing in front of you and the crosswalk to your right. This applies to both single and double lanes with a steady red right turn arrow(s).
What traffic law would you like to know more about? Send an email to: Julie.Carrasco@Hillsboro-Oregon.gov and it may be included in an upcoming Traffic Stop article.
