Hillsboro Police School Resource Officer Gains Insight Beyond Threat Investigations to Include Student Education & Prevention
School Resource Officer (SRO) Kevin Moore serves on the Hillsboro School District's school-based threat assessment team, as well as the level-two team which is district-wide. Important to that work is staying current with trends and investigative assessment.
Recently, SRO Moore attended the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals annual conference. The conference focused on how to complete threat assessments, current laws in our nation, and resources available to assist in threat assessment investigations.
"As a School Resource Officer, I take safety over our schools extremely seriously. This conference taught me how to be more vigilant and aware of different types of threats, how to investigate them, ways to educate our students on cybersafety, and preventative measures needed to keep those we serve safe."
The conference also provided a valuable opportunity to network and hear from professionals - SROs, school officials, private security and others - about their experiences and lessons learned.

Ask Yourself - Is it for a Present or Payment?
If someone is on the phone with you as you’re checking out telling you what to do – like buy a gift card(s) to pay for something and then give them the numbers, it's a scam. Gift cards are ONLY for gifts, NOT for payment.
LEARN MORE about how this scam plays out, and if you get tricked by the scammer, how you might be able to get some of your money back.
As a bystander, if you witness someone in a store that you think might be falling victim to these scammers, speak up. But try to do it discreetly, so as not to embarrass them in front of others. Share what you know about the scam and encourage them to hang up the phone and call a trusted family member or friend. You can also bring it to the attention of a store clerk or manager.
When Can Drivers Be in a Bike Lane?
It happens a lot. A driver pulls up to a red light with a vehicle(s) in front of them. That driver wants to make a right turn and they don’t want to wait for the light to turn green to take their turn. So they move to the right, creating a secondary lane by use of the bike lane to bypass the other vehicles. Not only is it illegal, but it presents a clear danger to bicyclists using that lane. A citation for this violation will cost you $265
Drivers may only cross the bike lane during the actual turn; not in preparation for the turn. And, of course, drivers need to check their mirrors and over their right shoulder to yield to bicyclists in the bike lane.
Other exceptions to drivers being in the bike lane include moving over for emergency vehicles or if your vehicle becomes disabled.
The City of Hillsboro is updating its Transportation Safety Action Plan to improve safety for all users on our streets. Every year, people are seriously injured or killed in traffic crashes, with those most vulnerable - biking, rolling, and walking - at greatest risk. Traffic crashes impact not only the people directly involved, but extend to families, friends, and workplaces.
This plan will frame the next five years of transportation strategy in Hillsboro with the safety goal of zero traffic deaths and serious injuries on our streets by 2035. Our efforts will focus on safer speeds, safer roads, safer vehicles, and safer drivers. This planning effort will use the latest research and technology to inform how we understand and address Hillsboro’s traffic safety issues. Most importantly, this work needs the input of the people who live and work here in Hillsboro.
