Trucking Advisory: LoLo Pass Road is NOT a Truck Route

Trucking Advisory: LoLo Pass Road is NOT a Truck Route

Do NOT take the LoLo Pass route in a big rig!

At least one GPS system indicates erroneously that LoLo Pass Road (using U.S. Forest Service roads FR1828 and FR18) is an alternative route from Portland, OR to Hood River over Mount Hood, to avoid the usual truck routes U.S. 26 and OR 35 or I-84. U. S. Forest Service roads FR1828 and FR18 are not maintained for winter travel. Taking this route in a big truck is dangerous.

The attached photo shows a semi stuck in the snow on a sharp curve Jan. 16, 2014. The truck is in danger of sliding off the road into the trees.

  • Trucks heading to Hood River from the Portland area should use established truck routes: I-84; U.S. 26 (Mount Hood Highway); and OR 35.

  • Truck drivers should avoid ANY roadway posted with signs reading “Not a Truck Route” or “Road Not Maintained for Winter Travel.”
