For Immediate Release
The following report is for October 18-25, 2013 and includes ODOT highways in Josephine, Jackson, Coos, Curry and Douglas counties. Projects are listed in the following order: highway, location, project name. Project construction costs are added in parenthesis as appropriate.
COOS COUNTY
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 233.4 to 234.5, McCullough Bridge rehabilitation (north section) ($23 million)
This five-year project, which begins this month, will help protect McCullough Bridge from corrosion by applying a cathodic protection treatment to the northern concrete arches of the structure. Between 2007 and 2011, a similar treatment was applied to the southern half of the bridge.
Watch for intermittent daytime and nighttime lane closures as workers clear trees and build an access road at the north end of the bridge. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 234-238, North Bend to Coos Bay paving, sidewalks and traffic signals ($6.5 million)
This project will replace four traffic signals in North Bend, upgrade sidewalks throughout the project area, improve drainage and pave four miles of U.S. 101 between McCullough Bridge in North Bend (MP 234) and Fir Street in Coos Bay (MP 238).
Lane closures: Watch for daytime and nighttime lane closures along U.S. 101 and on side streets in North Bend. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed. Watch for roadside workers and equipment.
Pedestrians: In downtown North Bend, pedestrians should watch for sidewalk closures due to curb and sidewalk work.
SB U.S. 101 traffic switch: Southbound U.S. 101 motorists should look for a traffic pattern change on Sherman Avenue between Virginia and Washington. Previously, traffic in the left lane had been required to turn left at Washington while the center and right lanes carried southbound U.S. 101 traffic to Coos Bay. This often resulted in drivers in the left lane suddenly swerving into the center lane so they could continue south on U.S. 101, increasing the chances of a crash. The new pattern will require traffic in the right lane to turn right onto Washington or continue straight on Sherman up the hill, while the left and center lanes will carry southbound U.S. 101 traffic to Coos Bay. Drivers in the left lane will still have the option of turning left onto Washington. Meanwhile, the new traffic pattern will require southbound U.S. 101 traffic in the right lane next to the North Bend Hotel to turn right onto Virginia.
CURRY COUNTY
U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 339-340, Pistol River Bridge rehabilitation
U.S. 101 is limited to a single lane of traffic at Pistol River (MP 339-340). A temporary signal will provide traffic control. Expect brief delays. Watch for flaggers and message boards.
DOUGLAS COUNTY
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 121 (McLain Ave.), Bridge deck seal
Motorists should expect intermittent lane and ramp closures at Exit 121 (McLain Ave.). Construction signage will be in place.
OREGON 138E (North Umpqua Highway), MP 41, Rockfall hazard mitigation
Watch for weekday lane closures between MP 41 and MP 42. Expect brief delays. Watch for flaggers and roadside workers and equipment.
JOSEPHINE COUNTY
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 67-82, Glendale to Hugo paving and northbound Sexton climbing lane ($28 million)
This project will repave more than 14 miles of Interstate 5 between Hugo and Glendale, construct a 2.8-mile climbing lane on the northbound approach to Sexton Pass, and make other safety improvements.
Please watch for roadside workers and equipment throughout the project area. Watch for reduced speed limits.
I-5 (MP 67-82): Watch for intermittent daytime and nighttime closures throughout the project area due to paving and striping work.
NB I-5 Sexton climbing lane (MP 66-69): Watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures between milepost 66 and 69.
Old Highway 99: Watch for construction work on Old Highway 99. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.

U.S. 199 (Redwood Highway), MP 7, Applegate River Bridge Replacement ($5.8 million)
Watch for intermittent lane closures in the project area. Flaggers will provide traffic control when necessary.
The speed limit on Redwood Highway has been reduced to 40 mph through the construction zone.
On U.S. 199 and Riverbanks Road, watch for workers and equipment on the shoulder, and watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the work zone.
JACKSON COUNTY
OREGON 62 (Crater Lake Highway) between Linn Road and Oregon 234, MP 10.04-13.63 - Eagle Point area, ($2.9 million)
Striping should be completed tonight and other details will be wrapped up next week.
Watch for daytime work off the roadway, and night work 7 p.m. - 7 a.m., with single lane traffic controlled by flagger.
The Barton Road intersection at the highway will be closed during this project.
This project constructs a two way left turn lane between Crystal Drive and Rolling Hills Drive, and repaves the highway between Linn Road and Oregon 234.
INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway) MP 36.6-44.1 Seven Oaks to Rock Point interchange, interstate paving, ($4.1 million)
Tonight (Friday night only) watch for intermittent ramp closures of all exit 40 ramps (Gold Hill) from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. for guardrail paving and striping.
Sunday night, October 20, rumble strip installation along I-5 will begin at 7pm.
This project paves I-5 from Seven Oaks (north Central Point) interchange to Rock Point interchange.
OREGON 99/Fern Valley Road/Bolz Road – Phoenix area
Local utility crews are working in the area performing relocates in preparation for the interchange project, scheduled to begin early next year.
Watch for possible single lane traffic and flaggers through out the interchange area and Oregon 99 on and near Fern Valley Road.
