For Immediate Release

The following report is for September 13-20, 2013 and includes ODOT highways in Josephine, Jackson, Coos, Curry and Douglas counties. Projects are listed in the following order: highway, location, project name. Project construction costs are added in parenthesis as appropriate.

COOS COUNTY

U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 234-238, North Bend to Coos Bay paving, sidewalks and traffic signals ($6.5 million)

This project will replace four traffic signals in North Bend, upgrade sidewalks throughout the project area, improve drainage and pave four miles of U.S. 101 between McCullough Bridge in North Bend (MP 234) and Fir Street in Coos Bay (MP 238).

Nighttime paving: Watch for nighttime (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) paving work along U.S. 101 in North Bend. Motorists should expect lane closures and brief delays on U.S. 101 between Stanton Ave. and McCullough Bridge. Also watch for lane closures on side streets. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.

Daytime construction: Throughout the entire project area, watch for intermittent lane and shoulder closures along U.S. 101. Watch for roadside workers and equipment.

Pedestrians: In downtown North bend, pedestrians should watch for sidewalk closures due to curb and sidewalk work.

U.S. 101 traffic switch: Southbound U.S. 101 motorists should look for a traffic pattern change on Sherman Avenue between Virginia and Washington. Previously, traffic in the left lane had been required to turn left at Washington while the center and right lanes carried southbound U.S. 101 traffic to Coos Bay. This often resulted in drivers in the left lane suddenly swerving into the center lane so they could continue south on U.S. 101, increasing the chances of a crash. The new pattern will require traffic in the right lane to turn right onto Washington or continue straight on Sherman up the hill, while the left and center lanes will carry southbound U.S. 101 traffic to Coos Bay. Drivers in the left lane will still have the option of turning left onto Washington.

OR 241 (Coos River Highway), MP 3.7, Chandler Bridge repair

Repair work on the Chandler Bridge will continue until the end of September. Watch for daytime lane closures. Flaggers will provide traffic control.

OREGON 42 (Coos Bay-Roseburg Highway), MP 23-38, Powers junction to Remote chip seal ($1.1 million)

Construction has been completed.

CURRY COUNTY

U.S. 101 (Oregon Coast Highway), MP 339-340, Pistol River Bridge rehabilitation

U.S. 101 is limited to a single lane of traffic at Pistol River (MP 339-340). A temporary signal will provide traffic control. Expect brief delays. Watch for flaggers and message boards.

DOUGLAS COUNTY

INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 121-136, Bridge deck seals

This project will apply deck seals to several I-5 bridges in the Roseburg and Sutherlin area.

Motorists should expect intermittent weeknight (Sunday night to Friday morning, 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.) ramp closures at Exit 121 (McLain Ave.), Exit 124 (Harvard) and Exit 136 (Sutherlin) until the end of September. I-5 motorists should watch for intermittent nighttime lane closures. Construction signage will be in place.

OREGON 38 (Umpqua Highway), MP 16, Scottsburg Bridge maintenance

Watch for intermittent daytime lane closures and brief delays the week of September 16-20 due to bridge maintenance work.

OREGON 138E (North Umpqua Highway), MP 41, Rockfall hazard mitigation

Watch for weekday lane closures between MP 41 and MP 42. Expect brief delays. Watch for flaggers and roadside workers and equipment.

JOSEPHINE COUNTY

INTERSTATE 5 (Pacific Highway), MP 67-82, Glendale to Hugo paving and northbound Sexton climbing lane ($28 million)

This project will repave more than 14 miles of Interstate 5 between Hugo and Glendale, construct a 2.8-mile climbing lane on the northbound approach to Sexton Pass, and make other safety improvements.

I-5 (MP 67-82): Watch for nighttime and morning lane closures throughout the project area due to paving work. Intermittent nighttime and morning ramp closures at Exits 80, 78, 76, and 71 will be necessary for paving and other construction work. Watch for roadside electronic message boards for more details of dates and times. Watch for construction vehicles entering and exiting the travel lanes.

NB I-5 Sexton climbing lane (MP 66-69): The right northbound shoulder between the Hugo interchange and Sexton Pass (milepost 66-69) is closed until this fall due to construction. Motorists should expect congestion and possible delays during peak travel times. Watch for intermittent nighttime lane closures between milepost 66 and 69. Watch for single-lane traffic at night due to paving and barrier work. Watch for roadside workers and equipment.

Old Highway 99: Watch for paving and construction work on Old Highway 99. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.

Entire project area: I-5 motorists should watch for roadside workers and equipment throughout the project area. Expect intermittent daytime and nighttime lane and shoulder closures. Watch for reduced speed limit in some areas. Watch for construction vehicles exiting and entering the travel lanes. Watch for paving work from now until the end of summer.

The speed limit on Redwood Highway has been reduced to 40 mph through the construction zone.
