We are getting closer to reopening the Hall Boulevard overpass in Tigard. As part of this work, a section of OR 217 in both directions will close for one night this Saturday, July 26 to safely remove the temporary pedestrian bridge over the highway.
People walking, cycling, and rolling will continue to have access across the highway using one of the sidewalks on the nearly-complete overpass before the temporary bridge is removed.
Overnight highway closure
A section of northbound and southbound OR 217 will close overnight starting at 11:59 p.m. this Saturday, July 26 and reopening by 8 a.m. Sunday, July 27. The temporary bridge will be removed from its supports and placed onto the newly built overpass to be fully dismantled.
Here's what you need to know:
-
A section of northbound and southbound OR 217 will close between Greenburg Road and OR 99W:
- Starting at 11:59 p.m. this Saturday, July 26 and reopening by 8 a.m. Sunday, July 27.
- All southbound drivers will exit OR 217 at Greenburg Road. The following southbound on-ramps will also close:
- Hall Boulevard
- Scholls Ferry Road
- Greenburg Road
- All northbound drivers will exit OR 217 at OR 99W. The following northbound on-ramps will also close:
- 72nd Avenue
- OR 99W (both)
- Expect some nighttime noise during the removal of the temporary bridge.
- Overnight OR 217 traffic should consider avoiding the highway by following the signed detour using I-5 to the south of the closure area, I-405 through Portland and U.S. 26 to the north of the closure area.
A section of OR 217 in both directions will close overnight on July 26.
The Hall Boulevard overpass is still expected to reopen in August.
One of the sidewalks on the nearly-complete overpass will open to people walking, cycling, and rolling beginning on July 26. After the contractor removes the temporary pedestrian bridge the night of July 26, it will be placed onto the vehicle lanes of the overpass for dismantling. We will send notice once the overpass fully opens. After Hall Boulevard overpass reopens, there will be intermittent lane closures for some remaining work but the overpass will remain open.
The final two weekend directional closures to complete paving on OR 217 north are currently scheduled for August 8-11 and August 15-18. The closure area on OR 217 north during the weekend paving will be OR 99W to Scholls Ferry Road. Similar to the weekend paving work on southbound OR 217 in June, these closures will start on Friday night at 9 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m. the following Monday.
We'll share more information as plans are finalized. Paving is dependent on weather and equipment availability, which means details may change suddenly. Please check the project website and your inbox regularly for the most up-to-date information.
What is this project?
The OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project will construct auxiliary lanes in both directions of OR 217 between Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and OR 99W. Auxiliary lanes are ramp-to-ramp connections on the highway that help reduce congestion by giving drivers more space and time to merge safely. This decreases conflicts, improves safety and the flow of traffic, and ultimately allows the existing lanes to work more efficiently. We expect up to 73,000 hours of travel time saved each year with these improvements.
We aren't just making improvements to the highway itself. We also need to make the area surrounding OR 217 safer for all users. In partnership with the City of Beaverton and Washington County, we are making targeted improvements to local bicycle and pedestrian routes.
