OR 217 in Tigard will close for one night, March 9, and one weekend March 15-18

Crews will need to close OR 217 in both directions in Tigard between OR 99W and Greenburg Road for a few days in March to safely install the temporary bike and pedestrian bridge and demolish the existing overpass.

Here's what you need to know:

• What: One overnight closure and one weekend closure of OR 217 in both directions in Tigard. Several on-ramps will also close during this time.
• Where: Both directions of OR 217 closed between OR 99W and Greenburg Road. Several on-ramps leading up to this area will also close:
  • Southbound Hall Boulevard on-ramp (currently closed).
  • Southbound Scholls Ferry Road on-ramp.
  • Southbound Greenburg Road on-ramp.
  • Northbound 72nd Avenue on-ramp.
  • Northbound OR 99W on-ramps.
• When: 
  • Overnight starting at 11 p.m. Saturday, March 9 until 8 a.m. Sunday, March 10.
  • One weekend starting at 9 p.m. Friday, March 15 until 5 a.m. Monday, March 18.
• Why: Crews will install the temporary bike and pedestrian bridge over OR 217 during the overnight closure and will demolish the existing Hall Boulevard overpass during the weekend closure.
• Detour: A signed detour will direct drivers to use U.S. 26, I-405 and I-5.
• Noise impacts: Expect nighttime noise on Saturday, March 9 during installation of the temporary bike and pedestrian bridge over OR 217 and between Friday, March 15 and Monday, March 18 during the demolition of the existing Hall Boulevard overpass. 

Hall Boulevard overpass in Tigard now closed for nine months

The nine-month closure of the Hall Boulevard overpass over OR 217 as well as the intersection of Hall Boulevard and Pfaffle Street in Tigard began early this morning, as planned. 

Here's what you need to know:

• What: The Hall Boulevard overpass over OR 217 near OR 99W and Pfaffle Street in Tigard is closed for approximately nine months. 
• Where: The closure starts just north of Pfaffle Street and extends through the south end of the overpass. The intersection of Pfaffle Street and Hall Boulevard is also closed. Drivers are not permitted to turn onto Hall Boulevard from Pfaffle Street or turn onto Pfaffle Street from Hall Boulevard. All vehicle traffic should use the signed detour. See below for information about people walking and bicycling.
• When: The closure is expected to continue for nine months. 
• Why: We need to demolish and then rebuild the overpass with wider footings to make room for the new auxiliary lanes and shoulders underneath on OR 217. The new overpass will include wider sidewalks and bike lanes, be more earthquake resilient, and Americans with Disabilities Act compliant.
• Noise impacts: Daytime construction noise will occur regularly as the new overpass is rebuilt. Nighttime noise is expected at the beginning of the closure during installation of the pedestrian bridge and overpass demolition. 

Detours during the overpass closure:

• For drivers: Use OR 99W to Greenburg Road to Hall Boulevard (and vice versa).
• For pedestrians and cyclists: People walking, rolling and bicycling will continue to have access across OR 217. Use a designated path on the overpass until a temporary bicycle and pedestrian bridge is installed by March 15. The temporary bridge will span the highway, running from Hall Boulevard on the south end to Pfaffle Street on the north end.
• For transit users: Trimet lines 43 and 78 are rerouted using Locust Street, Greenburg Road and OR 99W. There is not Trimet service on Hall Boulevard between Locust Street and OR 99W.
• Local access: The intersection of Pfaffle Street and Hall Boulevard is closed. Local traffic has access to Pfaffle Street between OR 99W and Hall Boulevard. Local traffic has access to Hall Boulevard between Greenburg Road and Pfaffle Street, and between OR 99W and the southern end of the overpass.  

We know these closures are a disruption for travelers and neighbors and we will work hard to complete this necessary work safely and as quickly as we can. Please remind your neighbors, friends, and family in the area to check the project website and sign up for email updates in order to get the latest information. As with all construction, the closure schedule is subject to change.

What is this project?

The OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project will construct auxiliary lanes in both directions of OR 217 between Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and OR 99W. Auxiliary lanes are ramp-to-ramp connections on the highway that help reduce congestion by giving drivers more space and time to merge safely. This decreases conflicts, improves safety and the flow of traffic, and ultimately allows the existing lanes to work more efficiently. We expect up to 73,000 hours of travel time saved each year with these improvements.

We aren't just making improvements to the highway itself. We also need to make the area surrounding OR 217 safer for all users. In partnership with the City of Beaverton and Washington County, we are making targeted improvements to local bicycle and pedestrian routes.
