In this email:
The new southbound frontage road connecting the Allen Boulevard and Denney Road interchanges is now open.
The frontage road, in conjunction with the new auxiliary lanes, reduces the amount of merging on the highway which in turn reduces crashes, reduces congestion and increases safety and reliability in the area. We expect a 20-30% crash reduction on OR 217 when the project is complete. The Allen Boulevard and Denney Road interchanges have long been one of the most congested sections on OR 217 with a high crash rate due to the close interchange spacing.
What’s changed:
- The Allen Boulevard southbound on-ramp to OR 217 and the Denney Road southbound off-ramp from OR 217 now operate as part of the new frontage road.
- Use the frontage road to travel to OR 217 south from Allen Boulevard.
- Use the frontage road to travel to Denney Road from OR 217 south.
The frontage road is southbound-only and is located adjacent to the highway. It works similarly to the frontage road to the north connecting Canyon Road and Beaverton Hillsdale Highway. We also widened both the Allen Boulevard off-ramp and the Denney Road on-ramp to accommodate the increased traffic on those two ramps.
Please remember to drive carefully, follow the posted speed limits, and look out for one another to help keep everybody safe, especially as we all get used to these new traffic patterns.
The new frontage road, helping drivers travel between Allen Boulevard, Denney Road and OR 217 south more safely.
The OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project will construct auxiliary lanes in both directions of OR 217 between Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and OR 99W. Auxiliary lanes are ramp-to-ramp connections on the highway that help reduce congestion by giving drivers more space and time to merge safely. This decreases conflicts, improves safety and the flow of traffic, and ultimately allows the existing lanes to work more efficiently. We expect up to 73,000 hours of travel time saved each year with these improvements.
We aren't just making improvements to the highway itself. We also need to make the area surrounding OR 217 safer for all users. In partnership with the City of Beaverton and Washington County, we are making targeted improvements to local bicycle and pedestrian routes.
