Within the next few weeks, we’ll open the new southbound frontage road connecting the Allen Boulevard and Denney Road interchanges. The new frontage road will allow drivers to travel more safely between these two closely-spaced interchanges. These changes will reduce the amount of merging which reduces crashes and increases safety and reliability in the area.
What’s changing:
- The Allen Boulevard southbound on-ramp to OR 217 and the Denney Road southbound off-ramp from OR 217 will operate as part of the new frontage road.
- Use the frontage road to travel to OR 217 south from Allen Boulevard
- Use the frontage road to travel to Denney Road from OR 217 south.
The frontage road will be southbound-only and is located adjacent to the highway. It will work similarly to the frontage road to the north connecting Canyon Road and Beaverton Hillsdale Highway. We also widened both the Allen Boulevard off-ramp and the Denney Road on-ramp to accommodate the increased traffic on those two ramps. The Denney Road southbound on-ramp that's been closed since April will reopen at the same time.
Thank you for your patience during the ramp closures at Denney Road. This new road marks a significant step toward making our roads safer and more efficient for everyone.
The westbound lane that is currently closed on the Hall Boulevard overpass in Beaverton will reopen temporarily during the holiday season. The lane will reopen by Nov. 23, 2023, and will stay open through Jan. 1, 2024, to accommodate increased holiday traffic.
Crews have made progress on the overpass widening, including the installation of four new concrete box beams. The completion of this work will be in 2024. This means that the lane will close again after Jan. 1, 2024, to provide crews with the space they need to finish the job. When this work is completed later in 2024, the overpass will be 19 feet wider with a new sidewalk on the north side of the overpass and bike lanes in both directions. These new facilities will provide a much-needed connection for people bicycling, walking and rolling between Scholls Ferry Road and Cascade Avenue
Four sets of concrete box beams will support the new sidewalk and bike lane on the Hall Boulevard overpass in Beaverton.
The OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project will construct auxiliary lanes in both directions of OR 217 between Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and OR 99W. Auxiliary lanes are ramp-to-ramp connections on the highway that help reduce congestion by giving drivers more space and time to merge safely. This decreases conflicts, improves safety and the flow of traffic, and ultimately allows the existing lanes to work more efficiently. We expect up to 73,000 hours of travel time saved each year with these improvements.
We aren't just making improvements to the highway itself. We also need to make the area surrounding OR 217 safer for all users. In partnership with the City of Beaverton and Washington County, we are making targeted improvements to local bicycle and pedestrian routes.
