The OR 99W off-ramp from northbound OR 217 reopened this morning, on schedule! As a reminder, the OR 217 lane closure and the 72nd Ave on-ramp closure are both expected to reopen next Monday morning, July 31st by 5 a.m.
We’re four days into the 11-day lane closure on OR 217 and 72nd Avenue on-ramp closure needed to build the new shoulder and auxiliary lane in this area. Over the weekend, crews completed most of the excavation of the old highway shoulder and started preparing the foundation for the new auxiliary lane.
Expect ongoing traffic slowdowns, delays, and significant congestion in the southern section of OR 217, I-5 as it approaches OR 217 and the surrounding area until Monday morning, July 31. We appreciate your continued patience and thank everyone who has been able to shift their trips and travel times.
If you can, please continue to use alternate routes, combine trips and/or shift your travel time away from the morning and evening commute. Check TripCheck.com before you leave for up-to-date traffic impacts.
Crews use excavators and heavy machinery to remove multiple layers of pavement along the highway shoulder. The new auxiliary lane will be able to support the weight of traffic when it's completed.
Crews getting ready to compact and smooth a new layer of pavement in the early morning hours.
Beginning Friday night, Aug. 4 at 9 p.m. through Monday morning, Aug. 14 at 5 a.m., we anticipate closing the southbound OR 99W on-ramp to OR 217 north. Our contractors will continue building the foundation for the future auxiliary lane and safety shoulder. During this time, there may also be nightly closures of the northbound OR 99W loop on-ramp to OR 217 north and one of the highway lanes in the area between these two ramps. View the detour map on the project website.
Heads up! These impacts are expected to begin in the next few weeks or months. We will provide more details as they become available.
- Southbound OR 217 reduced to one lane near the Greenburg Road interchange for one weekend later this summer. The southbound on-ramp from Scholls Ferry Road and the southbound off-ramp to Greenburg Road will also close during this time. This closure will allow crews to reinforce the highway shoulder to support the future auxiliary lane.
- Full closure of OR 217 in one direction at a time near the Hall Boulevard interchange for multiple nights later this summer. The closures will be in place between 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and will fully reopen for daytime traffic. These closures will allow crews to install steel support beams necessary for the widening work on the Hall Boulevard overpass.
Stay tuned to these email updates for additional closures coming up. We appreciate everyone's patience as we continue work throughout the project area during this busy summer construction season.
The OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project will construct auxiliary lanes in both directions of OR 217 between Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and OR 99W. Auxiliary lanes are ramp-to-ramp connections on the highway that help reduce congestion by giving drivers more space and time to merge safely. This decreases conflicts, improves safety and the flow of traffic, and ultimately allows the existing lanes to work more efficiently. We expect up to 73,000 hours of travel time saved each year with these improvements.
We aren't just making improvements to the highway itself. We also need to make the area surrounding OR 217 safer for all users. In partnership with the City of Beaverton and Washington County, we are making targeted improvements to local bicycle and pedestrian routes.
