I-5/OR 217 interchange July 21 to July 31. Two ramps in the area will also close.
About the lane closure
Beginning the night of Friday, July 21, ODOT crews will reduce a 3/4-mile section of northbound OR 217 to one lane, starting at the I-5 interchange and ending near the OR 99W interchange. The closure will be in place around-the-clock for 11 days. Expect traffic slowdowns, delays and significant congestion in this section of OR 217, I-5 as it approaches OR 217 and the surrounding area. The lane reopens Monday morning, July 31.
About the ramp closures

The 72nd Avenue on-ramp to northbound OR 217 will close for the full 11 days from July 21 to July 31.

Detour: Continue east on 72nd Avenue and turn left (west) on OR 99W. Use the OR 99W on-ramp to head north on OR 217.

The OR 99W off-ramp from northbound OR 217 will close for four days starting Friday night, July 21 and reopen Monday morning, July 24.

Detour: Continue north on OR 217 to the Greenburg Road off-ramp (exit 5). Use the on-ramp to get onto southbound OR 217 and exit at OR 99W.
These closures are needed to build a section of the new auxiliary lane on OR 217, which will reduce congestion by giving drivers more space and time to merge safely when it opens in 2025.
EXPECT DELAYS AND CONGESTION! This will have big impacts for people traveling through the area and we appreciate your patience during these 11 days. We anticipate traffic back-ups on the ramp detour routes as well.
Note that the northbound OR 99W on-ramp to OR 217 north that is currently closed will reopen by July 21.
We recognize that everyone has places they need to be. If your travel is flexible and you’re able to make adjustments, please consider taking a different route to avoid the affected area, using an alternate form of transportation and/or not traveling during peak travel times. Build in extra time to get to your destination.

About the work happening during the closures
Our contractors will build the foundation for the future auxiliary lane and safety shoulder along this section of OR 217. Construction will involve heavy machinery with crews excavating down three feet, putting down new foundation layers, and adding new pavement. People nearby can expect noise associated with these activities, day and night.
We are reducing traffic to one lane on the highway to create a safe space for the construction to take place. The closure begins near the I-5 interchange to provide room for the lanes to merge into one before the active construction zone.
As with all construction, the closure schedule is subject to change.
We appreciate your flexibility in adjusting your travel. If using the ramp detours or alternate routes, please travel slowly.
Heads up! Crews will reduce southbound OR 217 to one lane near the Greenburg Road interchange for one weekend later this summer. The southbound on-ramp from Scholls Ferry Road and the southbound off-ramp to Greenburg Road will also be closed. Work activities will be similar to what will take place in the northbound direction, with crews reinforcing the highway shoulder to support the future auxiliary lane.
There are also upcoming plans for additional ramp closures in the OR 99W interchange.
We’ll share more information as it becomes available. These traffic impacts will not happen at the same time as the northbound lane reduction detailed above. We expect congestion and back-ups in the surrounding area, as well.
The OR 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project will construct auxiliary lanes in both directions of OR 217 between Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway and OR 99W. Auxiliary lanes are ramp-to-ramp connections on the highway that help reduce congestion by giving drivers more space and time to merge safely. This decreases conflicts, improves safety and the flow of traffic, and ultimately allows the existing lanes to work more efficiently. We expect up to 73,000 hours of travel time saved each year with these improvements.
We aren't just making improvements to the highway itself. We also need to make the area surrounding OR 217 safer for all users. In partnership with the City of Beaverton and Washington County, we are making targeted improvements to local bicycle and pedestrian routes.
