News from the Assistant Director

On December 1, 2022, the Offices of Social Equity and Civil Rights merged to become the Office of Equity and Civil Rights. Upon my arrival at ODOT, I spent many months speaking to various individuals within the agency and external agency partners. After learning the needs and desires of my teams and the needs of external partners, I decided that both offices could provide better service internally and externally if we merged into one office. The Office of Social Equity had 5 team members that held similar skill sets to some people in the Office of Civil Rights. While job functions were different, this merge allows employees with interests in social equity and civil rights to cross-train and diversify the skills that the teams hold. I want it to be clear that equity should be embedded in our compliance related functions and that as we continue to make equity a foundation of how we do business at ODOT, we keep in mind the regulations that we have to abide by internally and on our projects. We are a stronger, more efficient team together, and we will be able to leverage human and financial resources more efficiently. We can do more for Oregonians with our efforts combined, and that is why we are all here; to serve Oregonians.

- Erika McCalpine

Assistant Director for the Office of Social Equity

ODOT's 2021-2022 Environmental Justice Program Report Available Online

In December 2022, ODOT submitted the 2021-2022 Environmental Justice (EJ) program report to the Oregon Office of the Governor and the state Environmental Justice Council (EJC). Oregon's Revised Statute 182.550 requires all directors of natural resource agencies to report annually to the EJC and to the Governor on the results of the agencies’ efforts to address environmental justice. The report describes how ODOT implements EJ considerations and advances EJ values, practices in public engagement, inclusion of communities traditionally underrepresented in public processes, and environmental impact monitoring and climate initiatives. It also includes more than 50 profiles of transportation projects across the state.

For information about ODOT's Environmental Justice program, contact David Morrissey, Office of Equity and Civil Rights, Title VI/EJ/ADA Program Manager, by email or call 855-540-6655 (toll free).
