Students Learn About Trades in Region 2

Twelve Reynolds Learning Academy students took a field trip to Cottage Grove to visit Region 2's OR 99: Urban Upgrades project. The field trip, organized by Paul Joiner, Region 2 field coordinator for the Office of Civil Rights, gave students the opportunity to learn about a variety of trades and consider whether they might be a good career fit for them in the future.

On site, the group met with prime contractor and DBE business Suulutaaq, who graciously welcomed the students.

“When we asked Suulutaaq if they would mind a tour of kids coming through, they jumped at the opportunity and even made sure that they had a few different types of work going on to demonstrate,” said Pat Woodhurst, P.E., assistant resident engineer on the project. Students got to experience excavating, pipe laying, surveying work and traffic control.
