ODOT awards bid to salvage and recycle Lincoln City houses
LINCOLN CITY— An effort by ODOT to salvage construction materials while deconstructing two unoccupied houses on state Right of Way in Lincoln City, took a positive step forward this week when a Washington firm was awarded a contract based on its plan to relocate both houses, recycle the foundation materials and send no materials to a landfill.
The houses are located on ODOT Right of Way adjacent to U.S. 101, near 28th Street. The houses had been constructed but never occupied when the Right of Way was purchased by ODOT for a highway improvement project that is still in planning.
“It has always been ODOT’s intent to salvage and recycle as much material as possible,” said ODOT Area 4 Manager, Frannie Brindle.
“To have a plan that will save virtually all of both houses is of great benefit to the community, the economy and the environment,” said Brindle.
Under the winning bid submitted by Mike’s Roofing, Inc. of Duvall, Washington, the two houses, with all floors intact, will be moved to nearby lots on Dune Avenue. The remaining foundation, which amounts to approximately 1% of the total materials, will be recycled. The plan calls for no materials to be sent to a landfill.
ODOT received six qualified bids for the salvage and recycling plan, ranging in cost from $47,000 to $101,731. The bids called for sending 5% to 40% of the materials to a landfill while salvaging 30% to 90%, and recycling 20% to 40%.
The winning bid was awarded at a cost of $47,000, and was the only bid that salvaged and recycled 100% of materials.
According to the terms of the bid, the houses will be relocated by the contractor during the spring and summer of this year.
