Drive Like You Work Here

Help keep everyone safe. Pay attention! Respect the zone.

May is “Transportation Safety Awareness” month in Oregon, and whether you are walking, bicycling, riding a motorcycle, or driving, you’ll most likely see some reminder to be safe. It might be orange cones indicating a work zone or it might be someone on the radio saying, ‘Slow down. Better roads ahead.’ Whatever the message, the goal is the same: improve safety for Oregonians and visitors to our state.

Just in time for Oregon’s driving, riding, walking, and cycling — and highway construction — season, ODOT and its partners around the state are reminding everyone to be aware of what’s going on around them and slow down when you see orange. We’re all in this together to stay safe!

Safe Driving Ads Win Awards

ODOT has just been informed that two of our traffic safety campaign videos created by Gard Communications have been awarded REMI awards from Worldfest. WorldFest Houston is one of the oldest and largest film and video competitions in the world. Last year, the award for “Families” (Work Zone Program) and “Are We There Yet?” (Excessive Speed Program) both won in their respective categories!

Striping Season Just Around the Corner

"It's wet paint, and it can most definitely color your vehicle." That's what striping crew members hope drivers will remember as the season for putting stripes down on roads all over Oregon approaches.

A cute, internally produced public service announcement reminds motorists that there are consequences when you interact with wet paint. Photographs from a day of striping show in-depth the complexity of the activity - and hit home the importance of following the rules in a work zone:

  • Obey the signs! Orange is your clue to slow down and pay attention so you can move safely through the work zone. If the sign on the truck says, "Do not pass" - then please, don't pass!
  • Schedule enough time to drive safely (be patient!). Call 5-1-1 or visit TripCheck.com for the latest traffic, project and travel information.
