Move it or work it?

Move it or work it? This is a question we must frequently ask ourselves when we arrive at an incident.

What is the correct answer? That depends on several factors…

Starting from the top!

  1. Upon arrival do there appear to be serious injuries or fatalities? If there appears to be serious injuries, the potential for serious injuries or death or a death in the field, then that automatically means you are NOT going to move that crash.
  2. If none of the above, are the vehicles able to be moved with the equipment you have? Is moving the vehicles going to create a bigger hazard? Do you have a safe area to place the vehicles?
  3. Before you move the vehicles have you contacted ODOT or OSP? In Oregon, they are the agencies with the authority removal laws that allow them to move or order to be moved the vehicles from the travel lanes on state highways. (ORS 810.415).

Everyone’s safety is at stake every time we work a crash. We want to make sure that when you are performing these tasks that you are safe, efficient and ensuring the safety of the motoring public. Safe, quick clearance in itself reduces the risks we face…that’s why it’s our mission.

So, are you going to move it or work it?
