I-5 closures for the Gibbs Street Bridge Project
and Marquam Bridge maintenance
North and south traffic will be re-routed from 11:30 p.m. Friday to 4:30 a.m. Saturday
Two projects along Interstate 5 in Southwest Portland will mean nighttime lane closures this Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
At 11:30 p.m. Thursday Dec. 15, all northbound lanes of I-5 will close to allow staging of equipment for work Friday night on the City of Portland’s Gibbs Street Pedestrian Bridge project. Motorists will be routed off the highway at exit 299A and may re-enter a few hundred yards north of there. All northbound lanes will be re-opened by 5 a.m. Friday.
Motorists heading to I-405 and U.S. 26 west may take I-5 north and connect with I-405 south at the Fremont Bridge. Exit 1A/Naito Parkway on I-405 will also be closed and motorists bound for downtown Portland can take exit 299A and follow the signs to City Center/Naito Parkway.
At 11:30 p.m. Friday Dec. 16, Interstate 5 will shut down in both directions to allow crews to place the third span across the highway for the pedestrian bridge. Lanes will begin re-opening at 4:30 a.m. Saturday with the freeway fully open by 9 a.m.
Northbound I-5 traffic will be diverted off the freeway at exit 299A, the Oregon 43/Hwy 26/Ross Island Bridge/Macadam Ave exit, and may rejoin I-5 a few hundred yards north. Motorists heading to I-405 north and U.S. 26 west will follow this route and be detoured onto I-5 north, where they can connect with I-405 south at the Fremont Bridge.
Southbound traffic on I-5 will be diverted off the road at exit 299A, the Oregon 43/Macadam
Avenue/Lake Oswego exit, and may re-enter the southbound highway again a few hundred yards south. Motorists traveling on I-405 south to I-5 south will be detoured onto I-5 north to exit 302A, the Rose Quarter/Broadway-Weidler Street exit, and will then follow the signs to I-5 south.
Exit 1A/Naito Parkway on I-405 northbound will also be closed.
The City of Portland and the Oregon Department of Transportation are building the 700-foot Gibbs Street Pedestrian Bridge over I-5 to connect the historic Lair Hill neighborhood to the South Waterfront district. The bridge will be built under the Portland Aerial Tram, serve pedestrians and cyclists, and be made of painted steel with a concrete decking. It is scheduled to be completed by March 2012.

At 9 p.m. Saturday Dec. 17, ODOT crews will close the northbound lanes of the Marquam Bridge to conduct electrical work. Traffic will be routed onto I-405. All lanes will be re-opened by 5 a.m. Sunday Dec. 18.
